Why Deadpool 3 Might Not Happen, According To Ryan Reynolds
It's no secret that superhero movies are everywhere. With three shared universes currently competing for box office domination, there's a new blockbuster every month or so. One franchise that has managed to stand out among the rest is Deadpool, which made an insane amount of money on a minimal budget back in 2016. The fourth wall breaking dark comedy proved a hard R rating could work in the genre, and all eyes are on the highly anticipated sequel Deadpool 2. While this looks like a franchise that could have serious legs, Ryan Reynolds recently revealed that a third movie might not happen. Namely, because focus on the X-Force may be how the character functions in the future.
I don't know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I really don't. I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don't think that you can keep doing that. I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe. I just think if you're going to do another Deadpool solo film, you've got to really, like, get that budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.
It looks like there might not be a proper story for Wade Wilson to get a threequel with Deadpool 3. With his world greatly expanding with Deadpool 2 and the possibility of crossovers with the proper X-Men franchise and maybe even the MCU, the Merc with the Mouth may be more focused on ensemble projects in the future.
Ryan Reynolds' comments to EW are sure to catch Deadpool fans by surprise. The character has inspired a cult following, and Ryan Reynolds has managed to truly inhabit the hilarious lunatic in both the first blockbuster and marketing campaigns for both Deadpool and its sequel. Because the property is so viable, its certainly a head scratcher that they'd have the character share the spotlight in future appearances.
Then again, doing both the X-Force franchise and solo Deadpool movies likely would have been a ton of work for Ryan Reynolds, who is also involved as a producer. 20th century already announced the X-Force movie with Drew Goddard (The Cabin in the Woods) attached to write and direct. The titular group is being assembled in Deadpool 2, so it certainly looks like the proper groundwork is being laid out for Wade Wilson to become more of a team player in the future.
