The debut of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice did something historic for the big screen comic book movie genre. The second DCEU movie introduced Batman and Wonder Woman, and it brought the legendary DC Trinity together in live-action for the very first time. The monumental nature of that union was not lost on director Zack Snyder, and the director recently took to social media to share an image from the costume test that brought the heroes together. Check it out, below.

Truly a moving moment for DC fans. The black and white picture seen above was posted to Zack Snyder's Vero account, and it shows the costume test that brought united Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, and Ben Affleck as Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman, respectively. Though other heroes like The Flash (Ezra Miller) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) would eventually get fully introduced during the events of Justice League, the introduction of the DC Trinity in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was the film that solidified the moment that the DC universe became a cinematic universe post-Man of Steel.

Of course, this photo leads us to wonder when we may see these characters unite for another adventure. We know that Wonder Woman 2 is currently on the way and set for a November 1, 2019 release date, and that Matt Reeves is currently developing a standalone Batman movie (though it remains unclear if Ben Affleck will return to the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne for that film). That said, it's not clear when a second Justice League movie will debut in theaters -- a stark contrast from when this picture was taken, as Zack Snyder's original approach to the DCEU involved a five-movie arc that would've included Justice League 2. Now it's just a matter of waiting to see how the folks behind the DCEU will choose to bring the Trinity together for another outing.

Fast-forwarding to the present, Zack Snyder has now mostly left the DCEU behind and moved on to new projects as a director. He's still involved as a producer on some projects like Wonder Woman 2, but his next film should take him away from the superhero genre, as he hopes to adapt Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead into a full-blown feature. That said, given the deluge of DC-related reveals that Snyder has posted to his social accounts in recent days, it seems like he still has quite a bit of passion for the landscape that he created.

Suicide Squads Director Has Addressed A Joker Plot Hole

Although Jared Leto's Joker in the DC Extended Universe retains traditional, distinguishing physical features like green hair and bleached white skin, Suicide Squad director David Ayer also took some creative liberties with the Clown Prince of Crime's look, namely by giving him a lot of tattoos and substituting grills for his natural pearly whites. After Suicide Squad was released, Ayer revealed that the reason Joker's teeth were gone was because Batman smashed them in retaliation for his arch-nemesis killing Robin, but this presented a plot hole given Harley Quinn's relationship with The Joker. More than two years later, Ayer has attributed this inconsistency to the DCEU timeline changing after Suicide Squad finished filming, as he wrote below:

Here's more context for those who need it. When Amanda Waller "introduces" Harley Quinn at the beginning of Suicide Squad, the villainess is listed as an "accomplice to the murder of Robin," and that by itself wouldn't have presented any problems. The problem came when David Ayer said that the reason Joker had those grills was because Batman broke them before locking him in Arkham Asylum, which is why the cackling evildoer got that 'Damaged' forehead tattoo afterwards. However, since Joker had the grills and ink on his forehead when he met Dr. Harleen Quinzel, the sequence of events don't match up.

Now thanks to Ayer answering fan questions on Twitter, we know this is a result of the DCEU timeline being altered after Suicide Squad wrapped principal photography, which was unfortunately out of the director's hands. Plot hole explained! The easy way around this is to just deem David Ayer's explanation for Joker's grills and 'Damaged' tattoo non-canon and simply come up with a different reason for why Jared Leto's Clown Prince of Crime has them. It's not hard to imagine Batman punching Joker in the face hard enough to break his teeth for a different reason.

Of course, the DCEU timeline wasn't the only thing changed during the Suicide Squad creative process. Much like Justice League later on, Suicide Squad went through significant reshoots in the first half of 2016 to reportedly alter the tone. As a result, many of Leto's Joker scenes were cut from the final product, which the actor wasn't too pleased about. In the end, while Suicide Squad wasn't a critical hit, it was successful commercially, enough for Warner Bros to order a sequel. For Suicide Squad 2, however, the directing reins have been passed to Gavin O'Connor, though the project was recently delayed due to Will Smith's schedule. Whenever Suicide Squad 2 gets off the ground, let's hope there aren't any more of these sudden DCEU timeline changes, especially concerning Batman's greatest enemy.

Along with Suicide Squad 2, Jared Leto's Joker is also set to be featured in Gotham City Sirens, an untitled movie about his relationship with Harley Quinn and even his own standalone movie, although it remains to be seen which of these projects will actually move forward. As for Harley, she'll be back next for Birds of Prey, which is dated for February 7, 2020. As for what else the DCEU has in the works, head to our DC movies guide for that information.

Black Panther Isn't Going Over Quite As Well With Viewers In China

In the United States and in various other parts of the world, Black Panther has been a phenomenon. In just under a month, it's already made over a billion dollars---despite being an origin story superhero film that doesn't feature Iron Man. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is currently running at 97%, which indicates nearly universal praise for the movie. However, the movie recently opened in China, and while it did decently at the box office, reviews have not been quite as praise-filled as they were here in the States.

Per recent box office reports, Black Panther opened over the weekend in China, making $66.5 million during its first three days at the box office. In comparison, Star Wars: The Last Jedi flopped in China and only brought in $7 million during opening weekend, so $66.5 million is a pretty hefty sum. Still, reviews for the movie have not been quite as positive as their American counterparts, with the Chinese site Douban---a site that's similar to IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes over here, listing the movie at a 6.8/10.

Some of the viewers who have seen Black Panther in China and believed it was OK have written about the movie and what they perceive are its problems. An average review for Black Panther in China can be translated along the lines of:

Still too routine, but the protagonist changed to black. Another piece of work that expands the layout is limited, and the action scenes and story highlights are limited. Some political ambitions have been inserted in the middle. Actually, it is boring.

Another commenter mentioned that people in China may not be used to movies with nearly all-black casts and dark nighttime settings, noting:

People may not be accustomed to black movies... They also set a lot of scenes at night.

University Lecturer in Shanghai Marcel Daniels told Sixthtone that people in China are not often exposed to diverse cultures, especially African cultures, and that may be reflected in the response to the film in China.

I find that a lot of stereotypes in China come from a limited exposure to diversity, so assumptions are made reflexively. Hopefully this film sparks interest in Chinese viewers to learn more about the history, people, and cultures of those from Africa.

As it stands, Black Panther is unapologetically African in its setting, its clothing, its costumes and its characters. Although that may be a little bit foreign in some marketplaces, the latest Marvel flick is still making money overseas, even in China. Perhaps Black Panther will lead to more movies with wider points of view at the box office there. Even if it doesn't, the MCU will definitely be seeing more of the characters.
