Disneyland's New Hotel Is Dead, So What Happens To Downtown Disney?

Disneyland is always growing and always changing, so several months ago when it was announced that Downtown Disney would be undergoing some major changes in preparation for the construction of a fourth Disneyland Resort hotel, nobody was particularly shocked. However, in the ensuing months, quite a lot has happened, and the hotel, after being put on indefinite hold, has now been officially killed by Disney Parks. While the loss of the hotel is an issue unto itself, it now leads to an even bigger question. What the hell is going to happen to Downtown Disney?

One of the things that makes Disney Parks so impressive is their completeness. No detail has been ignored or forgotten. Everything is in its place. However, right now, Downtown Disney has a gaping hole that desperately needs to be filled, but there are no obvious plans how to do that.

Construction for the new hotel was supposed to begin this past summer, and while that didn't happen, all of the businesses that needed to vacate the space to make room for construction did so. The AMC movie theater is gone, and a new one is being built a few blocks away at the Anaheim Gardenwalk. The ESPN Zone is closed, as is the Rainforest Cafe. The Earl of Sandwich shop actually reopened earlier this month, and based on this news may stay open. Other locations like the Starbucks could conceivably reopen as well, but the major locations are unlikely to come back, which means that without the hotel, that end of Downtown Disney is going to be a ghost town. That's a lot of real estate that won't be making anybody (Disney) any money.

Disney made a deal with the city of Anaheim to build the new hotel in the summer of 2016. However, that hotel was set to be located north of Downtown Disney on the site of a current Disneyland parking lot. Later, Disney Parks changed the plan to locate the hotel on the south end of Downtown Disney, near the current Disneyland Hotel. At the time, this seemed to be no big deal, but then the City of Anaheim decided that the change in location meant that the building would no longer qualify for the tax incentives that had been originally offered. Without the incentives, Disney put the hotel on hold, and on Wednesday, officially announced the hotel will not move forward. According to Disney spokesperson Liz Jaeger (via WDW News Today)...

We've taken the time to review the economics of our proposed Four Diamond hotel for Anaheim and have made the final decision to cancel the project. While this is disappointing for many, the conditions and agreements that stimulated this investment in Anaheim no longer exist and we must therefore adjust our long-term investment strategy.

So what's plan B? Whether or not Disney Parks had a plan B when things got going, they certainly need one now. One thing that we can be fairly certain of is that we won't see Disney spending a lot of money to do anything in the now open space. If they aren't willing to foot the bill without the tax breaks, they're not likely to do much of anything else that's going to cost them a lot of money. The statement above basically says there won't be any "investement in Anaheim" anytime soon.

More than likely, they will, of course, go looking for tenants to take over the now empty locations. There may or may not be a line of potential shops and restaurants waiting to get into prime space like Downtown Disney. On the one hand, the foot traffic has to be some of the best you could imagine. At the same time, rent on the space can't be cheap and many might not be able to afford it.

On top of that, there's the cost of building. Nobody is going to be able to simply move into space previously occupied by the Rainforest Cafe without doing significant construction. And just how excited will potential tenants be to move into the space anyway? A bunch of businesses just closed and people lost their jobs when Disney decided they wanted to do something else. There's nothing stopping them from doing the same thing again down the road. Some might be gunshy about spending the money to put in a new location in Downtown Disney.

With the hotel having been on hold for months, it's possible that we could see movement on new locations in Downtown Disney soon. While Disneyland Resort only officially announced that the new hotel was dead now, it's probably been realistically dead for some time. If Disneyland has spent the last few weeks and months putting a new plan together we could see it go into action soon. Although, if anything was certain it likely would have been announced alongside the official death of the hotel and that didn't happen.

At the moment the space that used to be the AMC Theater is a seating area and food trucks have been brought in to entertain guests and help feed the mass of humanity you find in the resort on a daily basis. This a decent enough stop gap, but it's not exactly very Disney. Although, food trucks that produced some of the iconic food that you can also get in the parks is an interesting idea that could be tried.

Another possibility is using the space for live performances. A small stage called Downtown Disney Live previously held small concerts and one thing Disney could try is putting up a more permanent structure and using it more regularly. By putting some sort of Disney-themed show in that space you give guests of the park, as well as locals not buying theme park tickets, a reason to traverse the length of Downtown Disney, increasing the odds people will enter the stores and spend money. There's frequently live music taking place at Downtown Disney in one place or another, but a more permanent location, that's given a bit more of a focus, might not be a bad idea. This is also something that could be done quickly, and fairly cheaply.

Alternatively, what I'd love to see is some sort of Disney nightclub environment. The House of Blues is gone and ever since Disney's California Adventure ended the Mad T Party, I've missed a place where I could have a drink, do a little dancing, maybe sing along to a live band performing songs everybody knows. The group that made up the Mad T Party players still performs together on occasion. Maybe a nightclub with a house band?

Eventually, the empty spaces will be filled, likely with more food options as those will always be welcome, but those options are months away at the soonest. Until then, Downtown Disney is going to have a gaping hole inside it that is going to be all the more obvious because everything around it looks so perfect.Image Courtesy Disneylandnews.com/Disney

Tom Hardy's Thoughts On Venom's Rating

Between Venom frightening innocents and taking a lethal approach to enforcing justice, his standalone movie looked like a worthy candidate for earning an R-rating, but rather than following in the footsteps of Deadpool and Logan, Venom was ultimately rated PG-13. This is comfortable territory for a comic book adaptation, and as we've seen with movies like The Dark Knight, you can still get away with a fair amount of mature content under this rating. Eddie Brock himself, Tom Hardy, is among the fans of Venom being rated PG-13, as he believes there's still plenty of room for the movie to be gritty and violent. When asked if there's been a particular question that fans have asked him the most about Venom, Hardy responded:

Is it going to be R-Rated? That's the big question and the answers been answered, isn't it?... It's a PG-13 in the states, but to be fair the thing can fulcrum into R-Rated. It can fulcrum into youth or children. My littlest ones, they watch Spider-Man and Venom quite comfortably, and Venom toys appear and LEGO appear... So it's not like they're scared by him, and at the same time there's a lot in the real estate that you can actually imbue with a complete sense of gratuitous violence if you really wanted to, and I think you've got the right people for that job if you want to push it. Of course that's where I'd love to go with it.

Tom Hardy makes a valid point. While it certainly would have been interesting to see Venom tackled through an R-rated, more adult oriented-lens, by taking the PG-13 route, this affords the movie the opportunity to draw in a wider viewing audience. As Hardy noted in his interview with MTV, although Venom is one of the scarier-looking Marvel Comics characters, younger fans know all about him because of how prominent he is in the Spider-Man mythology. Obviously the Venom movie is handling the character with a firmer hand compared to how he'd be depicted in a cartoon, but as Hardy sees it, PG-13 provides a nice balance between appealing to the adult fans and still giving the kids some things to enjoy. That said, maybe it'd be a good idea to keep the particularly young Spider-Man/Venom enthusiasts home from this one given all the heads being bitten off and talk of turds rolling in the wind.

Officially, the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) rated Venom PG-13 "for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for language." But unofficially, it was reported that Sony was pushing towards such a rating so that the door was open for Venom and Spider-Man crossing paths in the future. It's no secret that the Web-Slinger has no role to play in Venom's origin story this time around, and given how busy Tom Holland's Spidey is keeping in the MCU, who's to say it such a crossover will ever happen. In any case, Sony is keeping its options open, and it will be interesting to see if the other Sony Spider-Man spinoffs will also embark down the PG-13 path, or if one of them (like Morbius, for instance) will be afforded the opportunity to delve into the R realm.

Flashpoint Officially Landed Its New Directors

The DC Extended Universe is a tricky place. While it's hard high moments with Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman, the development of its blockbusters always seems to be a bit rocky. The DCEU had seen quite a few directors unceremoniously depart projects, after their announcement made serious news. There's no better example of this than the long gestating Flashpoint movie, which has already seen two different come and go. The studio seems to be hoping the third time is the charm, as directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been in talks to take on the project. Now it looks like it's actually happening, as Daley tweeted a not so thinly veiled confirmation on Twitter today. Check out his post below.

While not exactly a press release, there aren't many ways to interpret John Francis Daley's tweet. Alongside a GIF of the Scarlet Speedster running up a mountain, he simply told cinephiles and comic fans that it's actually happening. Cue the Hallelujah chorus.

It appears that John Francis Daley and his collaborator Jonathan Goldstein will be taking on The Flash's first solo movie within the shared universe. And given their respective comedic sensibilities, it's a solid choice by DC. The duo has worked together for years, writing the screenplay for movies like Vacation and Horrible Bosses. They also recently directed Game Night. Since Barry Allen is a naturally comedic character (especially with Ezra Miller's natural charm and quirkiness), having comedy-focused directors makes a great deal of sense.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein also recently received acclaim as two of the writers on Spider-Man: Homecoming. This once again speaks to their qualifications to take over Flashpoint, as The Flash is basically DC's answer to Spider-man. Both heroes are bright eyed and inexperienced, and watching their fish out of water attempts at superheroics brings natural comedy.

Hopefully Flashpoint has finally found its directors, and no unexpected departures are heading out way. The Flash movie was first announced with director Seth Grahame-Smith attached. He ultimately departed the project, with Dope director Rick Famuyiwa taking over, casting Kiersey Clmmons as Irish West along the way. But Famuyiwa would also end up dropping out, leaving the movie in apparent jeopardy.

While John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been long rumored to be directing Flashpoint, it's a relief to hear that the deal is done. The DCEU is going to have to move fast in order to keep up with the behemoth Marvel Cinematic Universe. There's only one film set to release this year: James Wan's Aquaman in December. Shazam! and Wonder Woman 2 should arrive in 2019, so it's clearly going to be quite a while before Flash finally get a solo outing.

Aquaman will arrive in theaters December 21st. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies.
