Bruce Campbell Backtracks On Idea For New Evil Dead Movie
Bruce Campbell is a talker. He's a great person to listen to during interviews, and he often has interesting stuff to say. However, he occasionally talks so much that he may talk a bit out of both sides of his mouth, which is what has been happening recently regarding the potential for another Evil Dead movie. On his Hail to the Chin book tour, Bruce Campbell was asked about doing another Evil Dead movie in Dublin and he had the following response:
Another movie? No, no, no, because if they cancel [Ash vs. Evil Dead], then I think Ash is done.
Seems pretty straightforward, right? Currently, Ash vs Evil Dead is hanging out while Starz decides whether or not to bring the series back for Season 4. It may be a little while before we learn more, as Season 3 is currently in the middle of its run and is expected to air new episodes until the end of April. Although, the comment about Ash being done is a straightforward answer during the Hail to the Chin tour (via Dave Williams' video), it's also not the first time Bruce Campbell has addressed the possibility and he previously related something different about the possibility of more Ash, specifically in movie form.
Just a couple of weeks ago, Bruce Campbell was talking about how Ash vs Evil Dead hasn't been officially renewed yet. At the time, he didn't say definitively that if the show was cancelled another movie would be in the cards, but he did indicate that it was a possibility, saying at the time:
We're going to see what the TV gods have in store for us. We're ready either way. If they take us off the air, we can think about another movie. And if they don't, we can just keep plugging away.
Apparently, something happened between this interview and his book tour appearance to make him go from an attitude of "maybe sometime down the line" to the hard, soul-crushing idea that Ash may stop fighting the good fight against the Deadites. Neither statement totally contradicts one another, as a maybe isn't a yes, but Bruce Campbell's more recent comment does indicate he's a little less keen on the idea than he maybe was before. So, if Ash vs Evil Dead is done after Season 3, it might be time for Campbell to take on some other projects---including maybe writing more books?
I would be remiss if I didn't add that the franchise was already rebooted back in 2013 with Jane Levy as the lead. That movie made nearly $100 million world on a $17 million budget, but another movie of that ilk was not made, either. For now, there are plenty of horror projects coming out in 2018, and of course, if you are a cable subscriber, you can catch episodes of Ash vs Evil Dead over at Starz. TV Blend will let you know as soon as the show gets renewed or cancelled, as well.
