We Almost Got 2 New Halloween Movies Instead Of 1
It's no secret that the horror genre is in a bit of a renaissance right now. A ton of new and original concepts have been brought to the silver screen over the past few years, resulting in massive both critical and box office successes. Blumhouse Productions is behind many of the most recent hits, including Get Out, Don't Breathe, and Insidious. The production company has now turned its head onto the classics, with a new Halloween sequel arriving this October. Starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Nick Castle, the new movie will retcon the sequels and create a new timeline. But apparently, we could have originally gotten two Halloween movies. As writer Danny McBride recently revealed,
We were going to shoot two of them back-to-back. Then we were like, Well, let's not get ahead of ourselves. This could come out, and everyone could hate us, and we'd never work again. So, let's not have to sit around for a year while we wait for another movie to come out that we know people aren't going to like. So, we were like, Let's learn from this, and see what works, and what doesn't. But we definitely have an idea of where we would go [with] this branch of the story and hopefully we get a chance to do it.
While there seem to be plenty of ideas to continue the story of Laurie Strode, Michael Myers, and the town of Haddonfield, everyone involved in Blumhouse's Halloween decided to simplify things and make one great movie. If it happens to make a ton of money at the box office, then perhaps we could end up getting that second sequel.
Danny McBride's comments to EW show how methodically everyone involved in Halloween is taking the new sequel. The writers and director David Gordon Green are massive fans of the franchise, and want to make a new Halloween movie that more closely resembles John Carpenter's classic original. As such, liberal changes have been made to the canon, including no longer having Laurie and Michael be siblings. He's just a crazy guy, and she's a full grown woman intent on not being a victim again.
Of course, news that there are potential storyline for another Halloween sequel is going to be very exciting for the generations of fans. While it seemed like Halloween was being billed as Laurie Strode and Michael's final confrontation, we could potentially get even more movies. Does this mean Jamie Lee Curtis' OG scream queen will survive the upcoming sequel? Or will the franchise pivot over to Laurie's daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak.)
Luckily, we won't have to wait too long to get some answers. Halloween will arrive in theaters on October 19th, 2018. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
