How Avengers: Infinity Wars Directors Feel About Tom Hollands Problem With Spoilers
After ten years and twenty blockbusters, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a massively popular franchise that consistently dominates the box office. As such, the pressure is on for the studio to keep the MCU's secrets, and ensure that loyal moviegoers have a spoiler-free experience at the theater. That's easier said than done, especially when it comes to actor Tom Holland, who has quickly become a fan favorite through his performance as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Holland is one of Marvel's most loose lipped stars, and is constantly getting in trouble for revealing too much and spoiling the contents of his blockbusters. The Russo Brothers were recently asked about this trend, and Joe Russo was able to laugh it off, saying:
What are you gonna do? He's the nicest guy in the world. So you can never be punitive towards Tom Holland.
While Tom Holland might not always use the best judgement when it comes to the MCU's more sensitive material, it seems that the actor is just so likable and talented that he gets a break. Considering how popular Spider-Man has become since his debut in Captain America: Civil War, this logic does hold up.
Tom Holland may be the third actor to play Spider-Man on the silver screen, but he's bringing something truly unique to the beloved character. Holland is a far young actor than his predecessors, and also has genuine gymnastic abilities to utilize when filming. His naivety and excitement is a breathe of fresh air in the greater MCU, and he's managed to steal the audience's hearts in only three appearances.
In his same conversation with EW, Joe Russo also addressed the biggest way Marvel tried to keep Tom Holland in check when doing press for Avengers: Infinity War: the always delightful Benedict Cumberbatch. Marvel's Doctor Strange is often paired with Holland during interviews, stopping Tom Holland from getting himself into trouble time and time again. Russo seems tickled with this interaction, saying:
By the way, Benedict is a great partner for him on the press tour. Because Benedict is actually very good at dancing around spoilers. And monitoring Tom Holland.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Holland's hilarious dynamic during interviews has since gone viral, as a compilation was made showing just how many times the Sherlock actor has saved his co-star from utter disaster. While it's unclear how Doctor Strange and Spider-Man will factor into Avenger 4 after the snap, let's hope there's more interviews to come from this unexpectedly dynamic duo.
Of course, Tom Holland isn't the only Avenger with a habit for spoiling things. The other biggest offender is Mark Ruffalo, who has done everything from spoiling the end of Infinity War, to accidentally live-streaming the premiere of Thor: Ragnarok. But both of the actors' performances are pretty great, so ultimately Marvel is going to let a lot slide.
