Singapore Authorities Accuse Crazy Rich Asians Author Of Failing To Report For Military Service
Hollywood has a brand-new sensation from the far east, with Crazy Rich Asians bringing Asian culture (specifically the culture of Singapore) to western audiences. The film has handily turned into a massive hit that many viewers have flocked to, but the success of the movie has apparently drummed up some issues as well. Specifically, it looks like Kevin Kwan (the author of the novel that the film is based on) is wanted by authorities in Singapore for skipping his military service.
Unlike in America, military service is required for male citizens of Singapore over the age of 18. Per a report from Deadline, Crazy Rich Asians author Kevin Kwan did not register for military service when he was notified to do so back in 1990, and he is now wanted by authorities in the country for not fulfilling the duty. If Kwan returns to Singapore, he could potentially face up to three years in jail and a fine of roughly $10,000 -- though it's worth noting that his recent success might help put a dent in the fine.
As of right now, Kevin Kwan has not officially commented on the accusations against him or his "wanted" status in Singapore. For now, it looks like he's merely basking in the success of the adaptation of his best-selling book, along with the fact that a sequel just received a green light. Even with this issue looming, the future looks pretty bright for Kwan, as Warner Bros. is going back to his creative well for an adaptation of China Rich Girlfriend.
Crazy Rich Asians is a romantic comedy about an Asian-American woman who travels to Singapore to meet the family of her boyfriend. However, upon her arrival in the country, she experiences a multitude of culture shocks when she discovers that his family is actually (per the title of the movie) incredibly wealthy to the point of near-royalty. The film has received immense praise for its representation of Asian culture so we will have to wait and see what happens as it turns into a full franchise and the story of Kevin Kwan's military service unfolds.
