How Marvel Feels About Brie Larson's Captain Marvel Photos Getting Leaked
Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe wraps up Phase Three with Avengers 4, the franchise will wind the clock back to the 1990s and introduce moviegoers to Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel. Ever since Brie Larson was confirmed to be playing Carol at the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, many Marvel fans have been looking forward to seeing how the actress will look in costume. While we're still waiting for that official look, last month Captain Marvel set photos leaked showing Larson in a Captain Marvel costume that design-wise looks similar to Carol's normal costume from the comics, but had a green color scheme rather than the traditional red, blue and yellow. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feign isn't particularly bothered by these photos coming out. As he explained:
If you want to film out in public --- and Captain Marvel has a lot of scenes that will be shot on location --- it's gonna happen. Everything is filmed [by paparazzi] nowadays, so years ago, we decided, 'If it's gonna happen, let it happen.' Most people are savvy enough to know they're looking at a behind-the-scenes photo, completely out of context. So we don't do things like rush photos. We released some concept art of her with different colors. People online have correctly identified what's going on there.
The MCU is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and somewhere during that time, Kevin Feige and his fellow Marvel bigwigs realized that is's impossible to put a cap on any set photos being leaked, hence why they've adopted this 'go with the flow' attitude. Plus, as he pointed out, most people are smart enough to realize that simply looking at a set photo doesn't paint the full picture of what's happening, and in some cases, the costume/character appearance will look different in the finalized movie. But what's particularly interesting in Feige's comments to Vulture about Captain Marvel is folks across the interwebs have already correctly predicted why Brie Larson is wearing a green costume. Most intriguing.
Right now there are two prevailing theories about why Carol Danvers' suit is green in these Captain Marvel set photos. The first is that because green films better, there will be some tinkering in post-production to alter the suit's appearance. The second is that Carol is wearing a prototype version of her costume, and that later on she'll rock the red, blue and yellow coloring, which we've already seen in concept art from last year's San Diego Comic-Con. My money is on the latter theory. Captain Marvel is going to feature several Kree characters, so it's possible that after obtaining her special abilities, Carol will initially put on a standard Kree uniform and modify it to resemble what she wears in the comics either towards the end of Captain Marvel or in Avengers 4.
