Grease Is Finally Giving Danny And Sandy The Kiss That Was Supposed To End The Movie
There are few movie musicals quite as beloved as Grease. The 1978 classic has remained a major part of modern pop culture, and is still played on syndication-- allowing generations of fans to sing along and say every line of dialogue. In fact, FOX recently did its own live production of the musical, combining what was best about both the original play and the movie. Every song in Grease is iconic, but a standout has always been the grande finale "We Got Together." This last number finds Danny and a new, sultry Sandy fly off into the sunset (literally) in a red hot rod. But the couple never get their big last kiss... until now. A deleted scene with the kiss is being released to the public via a special feature on Grease's 40th anniversary edition. As Grease director Randal Kleiser tell it,
They were up in the car, and I said, 'Why don't you kiss?' And they did. I don't know what happened, why that never got in. It astounds me that it wasn't the ending.
It looks like Danny And Sandy's final kiss was likely just cut due to an editing error. And since movies weren't quite as detailed and specific in the past, this error seemed to have somehow slipped through the cracks. Haven't Danny and Sandy been through enough? They deserve their happy ending!
Randal Kleser's comments to USA Today are going to be very exciting for the generations of Grease fans out there. The movie has been passed down from generations since its original 1978 release, so there are a ton of emotions tied to the fates of the T-Birds and Pink Ladies. After Danny and Sandy sing one final duet in "You're the One That I Want" (and we find out Rizzo isn't pregnant), audiences watch as the whole group sings one more song and the love interests fly away... sans kiss.
Grease's director isn't the only person from the original movie that is excited about the kiss finally coming to light. Danny Zuko himself John Travolta also opened up about the inclusion of Danny and Sandy's long missing smooch. When speaking about the 40th Anniversary version, he said,
It's so cool. Danny and Sandy kiss on the beach at the beginning of the movie, and I think people would like to see that kiss at end.
The man has a point. Before the title song even happens, Grease opens with Danny and Sandy saying goodbye to each other after their "Summer Lovin". They kiss each other goodbye, not realizing Sandy would be transferring to his school. Finishing the movie with another kiss does seem right, and it's a shame that it hasn't been included for these past few decades.
