Disney Pledges Millions To Notre Dame Repairs

On Monday, a tragic event took place as a massive fire broke out at the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris. One of the most well known and beautiful buildings in the world received serious damage that is still being examined to determine its full extent. One company that has a tangential relationship with the location is Disney, having produced an animated film set at the iconic location. Now, the studio has pledged $5 million to help rebuild the cathedral.

For those of us who have never been lucky enough to visit Paris, our strongest connection to Notre Dame may be Victor Hugo's story The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The book was the basis for a 1996 animated feature by Disney. The company also owns two theme parks in the city. These reasons, combined with just the general pain and sadness that the fire caused many people, are likely the reasons the company felt compelled to donate to the reconstruction effort.

While Notre Dame can certainly be rebuilt, it will never really be the same place again. While everything can conceivably be recreated, parts of the structure were built in the 13th century, and you can't make that come back.

Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame was not one of Disney's massive hits, it barely broke $100 million domestically, though it did much better overseas. Word has been that Disney was planning on creating a live-action version of Hunchback, as it has with so many of its animated films. The project reportedly will star Josh Gad as Quasimodo. This assumes that recent events haven't had an impact on the movie.

While Hunchback might not be one of Disney's most loved movies, that hasn't stopped many from requesting it be added to Netflix in the US so that people can comfort themselves with the animated version of the building.

The film has been available on Netflix before, but is not listed currently, likely because Disney is getting ready to include it as part of its own streaming service, Disney+.

Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame is actually a remarkable film that doesn't get the credit it deserves .The movie may be the darkest, most mature thing to ever come out of Walt Disney Animation Studios. It has a villain who is motivated by lust, which is an utterly bizarre thing to see in an animated Disney movie, but that's part of what makes the film so special. Nobody can accuse Disney of not taking risks with that one.

Many different people and organizations are donating funds to help rebuild Notre Dame. Even if it's not quite the same place ever again, the fact that much of the cathedral survived is certainly something to be happy about. Although, in the same way that it took more than 100 years for Notre Dame to be built the first time, it will be a long time before repairs are complete.

Common wisdom says you get one perspective or point-of-view (POV) character per scene, preferably per chapter, and usually per book. My latest novel, The Valley of the Dry Bones, has one perspective character throughout. Though it's written in third person, it's limited to just my lead character's perspective.

Directed by Cathy Yan. With Ali Wong, Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ewan McGregor. After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

How Crazy Rich Asians Editor Turned A Mahjong Scene Into An Avengers-Style Battle

How Crazy Rich Asians Editor Turned A Mahjong Scene Into An Avengers-Style Battle

This article contains some spoilers about the end of Crazy Rich Asians. You've been warned!

With a closer look at Crazy Rich Asians, there is quite the clever shift between the light and funny romantic comedy that draws us in and the dramatic second act we are dazzled with as the credits roll. It's quite the subversive take on an ensemble comedy that critics and audiences alike have been celebrating with box office highs we forgot a movie of this genre could achieve. One scene in particular is arguably the most powerful in the film, and has nothing to do with the romance between Rachel and Nick. It's when Rachel (Constance Wu) challenges Nick's mother (Michelle Yeoh) to a game of Mahjong. It's a dense and dramatic sequence, and when I spoke with the film's editor Myron Kerstein, he noted that he considers it the highlight of his career: his Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon:

The Mahjong scene to me is the spiritual center of the film. That's where these two strong female characters collide. This is our finale, it's a big fight sequence, our Avengers fighting it out, but it's under the guise of this formal setting. Those types of scenes are kind of like a ballet or slow dance or subtle tte--tte, and those are hard scenes to cut [together]. It's almost easier when you have two people screaming at each other... So I had to figure out a way to also convey a game that nobody really knows. So how do you do that? How do you represent with looks and little pieces and gameplay here and there that this piece represents... for example, with this piece I'm sacrificing my love for Nick and at the same time sacrificing this tile in order to get this idea across on my emphasis on it.

Just like a high-budget battle sequence right out of an Avengers film, a scene such as this relies on action and careful editing for the scene to be entertaining and coherent. Myron Kerstein was able to convey Mahjong to a diverse audience, many of which probably had never heard of or played the game, and have them understand exactly what happened in the scene. He noted that he himself didn't know the details of its gameplay until he watched director Jon Chu and actress Michelle Yeoh discussing the game as they filmed the scene. He treated the gameplay between Constance Wu and Yeoh as choreography as he crafted the cut together.

Myron Kerstein also credits Constance Wu's performance as inspiration when cutting the scene, as she gave a particularly powerful performance. While playing the game she shares a realization to Eleanor about her own self-worth and identity that has been challenged throughout the film through her judgement. Said Kerstein,

It's just a really beautiful and dramatic scene that I think no one's ever seen before. Constance gave a really beautiful performance, but it had a lot of [variety]. Often times the scene was so emotional for her that she would break down, but there was one line both from the script and the performance she delivered to pull the whole scene outward. In this line 'I'm not leaving because I'm scared or because I think I'm not enough, because maybe for the first time in my life I know I am.' For this performance, I really needed to build the whole performance into this ballet, this gameplay, for this moment when she laid down tiles to Michelle which conveys 'I could have won this game the whole time. I could have won this game with your son, just like this physical game,' and I just think that having a scene like that you get once in a lifetime.

The scene is certainly quite the showdown of emotions for the two characters who both were looking in the best interests of Nick from their perspectives but couldn't meet in the middle. Crazy Rich Asians challenged the ideals of a culture with its message as Rachel embraced and Nick's affluent family embraced her upbringing with a single mother as being enough for the Prince Harry of the east. The film is currently in theaters, and will likely be available on home video before the end of the year.

One Scene That Was Difficult For Black Panther To Shoot

One Scene That Was Difficult For Black Panther To Shoot

While Marvel fans are counting down the day until Avengers: Infinity War, the studio itself is still very much riding high on the success of Black Panther. Ryan Coogler's explosive and thrilling blockbuster brought the character into the spotlight for the first time, after his introduction in Captain America: Civil War. Black Panther shattered box office expectations, breaking records and giving the MCU yet another critical win under its belt. The movie has been praised as a significant moment in pop culture, although now it appears that filming had its challenges. Namely, the waterfall scenes that happened a few times over the course of the film's runtime. Victoria Alonso, the executive vp physical production for Marvel Studios, told the story herself, saying:

Every movie has its own challenge. When we were shooting the waterfall scene in Black Panther, the sun was hitting the water in such a way that it was reflecting in the eyes of the actors, and making some people feel dizzy. So we had to stop shooting. It rains in Atlanta a lot, as it does in London. You are constantly chasing weather. You have no way of managing that.

It looks like the hot Atlanta sun was enough to ruin filming on Black Panther, especially when it interacted with water in Wakanda's iconic waterfall. Obviously the set itself was constructed by Marvel for the blockbuster to film in Atlanta, but that doesn't mean that weather couldn't still put a wrench in production's plans. It's reasons like this why so many Marvel movies seem to film their biggest sequences from the safety of a sound stage, surrounded by green screens.

Victoria Alonso's comments to THR are even more interesting when you stop and think about how many times the waterfall came into play during Black Panther. We are first introduced to the iconic set piece during T'Challa's coronation ceremony. He is challenged by frenemy M'Baku, and they battle from atop the waterfall.

Killmonger eventually followed suit, and yet another challenge was made against T'Challa's mantle as King and Black Panther. While the title character didn't fare to well that time around, it once again brought the location back into the narrative. One has to wonder which (or both?) of these scenes was delayed by the Atlanta weather during shooting.

Filming new installments of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is clearly tricky, especially considering how much secrecy is associated with each blockbuster. Captain Marvel is currently running into a new set of challenges, as set photos reveal things like costumes and settings. Ultimately this is the risk of filming outside. That, and the weather.

Black Panther is still playing in theaters now, and a handful of characters will also appear in Avengers: Infinity War starting on April 27th, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
