How Wonder Woman Helped Elizabeth Olsen Get Over Her Scarlet Witch Cleavage
Superhero costumes come up quite a bit, because superhero movies are quite in vogue right now. While most superhero costumes are tight, one thing the ladies have to worry about that the dudes patently don't is cleavage, and for a long time Marvel's Elizabeth Olsen was annoyed that her character seemed to be the only one in the MCU that really gave her pronounced cleavage. But then DC's Wonder Woman hit the big screen with an even skimpier look, and it gave her a greater perspective on what superhero costumes are meant to be. Olsen said:
It's funny because sometimes I look around and I'm just like -- wow, I'm the only one who has cleavage, and that's a constant joke because they haven't really evolved my superhero costume that much. But then you look at where it started in the comic books and it was a leotard and a headband so... oh, it's horrible, it's so horrible. So at least they know that's not cool. But then they made Wonder Woman, you know? And that's what she's in. I think of the costumes and what we have to wear -- it's more about iconic images, because that's what these movies are.... I think that's the goal with the costumes, and it's not representing the average woman.
Elizabeth Olsen has popped up in several different Marvel movies, so she's pretty familiar with what Scarlet Witch wears at this point. And while Scarlet Witch switched between a skirt-based outfit in Avengers: Age of Ultron and pants in Avengers: Infinity War, Scarlet Witch has always maintained a look that nods at her comics counterpart. Granted, despite the cleavage, she does note it is quite a bit less sexy in comparison to the leotards the comics character has worn. Still, it took seeing what Gal Gadot wore on the big screen to give Olsen some perspective on what she wears in the movies and why the look is part of the overall vibe of her character, a nod to the comics that paved the way for these big screen movies to happen.
Still, if Elizabeth Olsen had her way, Scarlet Witch would be a little more toned down. In the Elle interview, she also noted:
It would just not be a cleavage corset. I like corsets, but I'd like it to be higher. Everyone has these things that cover them -- Tessa Thompson does, Scarlett does. I would like to cover up a bit.
She's not the only female character who has found the costume to be daunting. Scarlett Johansson, who plays Black Widow, has previously spoken out about getting to see the Black Widow costume for the first time and being not-so-pleased after realizing how tight and form-fitting the costume would be. It could be argued that at least Scarlet Witch has a coat to cover up a bit, whereas Black Widow's look is super, super tight. The grass is always greener on the other side, I'm sure.
Still, it's not just the ladies who are stuck in tight clothing. In general, both the MCU and DC universes try to maintain the iconic nature of the comics costumes, even when choosing to go in different directions for the big screen. Chris Hemsworth even recently joked about how all of the Marvel are not comfortable, also noting it's "suffer [ing] for fashion." All in all, Elizabeth Olsen doesn't seem too upset about the choices made for her costume, especially after realizing that things could certainly get tighter, shorter and more form-fitting. She can thank Wonder Woman for taking one for the superhero team, there.
