New Star Wars Story Reveals A Luke Skywalker Scene We Didn't Get In The Last Jedi
While it was released back in December, the conversation revolving around Star Wars: The Last Jedi hasn't slowed down. Director Rian Johnson provided a subversive sequel that challenged everything fans were expecting. Johnson also left plenty of scenes on the cutting room floor, with the finished product coming in at a solid 2 hours and 32 minutes. One of the cut scenes included Luke's emotional reaction to Han Solo's death in The Force Awakens, and now The Last Jedi comic book adaptation has expanded that scene. And it was a gut punch that also provided a more intimate look at Luke's relationship with The Force.
The scene in question is set in Luke's hut on Ach-To. Rey informs Luke that his pupil and nephew Ben Solo (Kylo Ren) killed his father, Han. Luke's shock is clear from his face, and we're privy to the crestfallen hero's inner dialogue. Luke hates that he didn't see Han's danger coming, or even sense when his friend perished. This is because he cut himself off from The Force, with his isolation resulting in being kept in the dark about Han's death.
Luke's anger then begins to manifest in his power, as objects around his hut begin levitating. Ultimately Chewie comforts his friend, and they embrace. It's a heartbreaking scene that some fans were missing in The Last Jedi. Although without Luke giving unnecessary exposition, there's no way the audience could have known what Luke was thinking in that moment.
The Last Jedi's comic adaptation (via Io9) really helps the fans get a glimpse into Luke Skywalker's psyche throughout the course of the film. This intimate look also explains how difficult his separation from The Force is. In another scene with self-narration, Luke explains this process, saying:
It has taken me years to master this discipline, to close myself off from the energy that binds me to all living things, everywhere. To achieve true solitude. Still, there are times when my greatest effort is not enough. When The Force demands to be heard. As it does now. It speaks to me, undeniable. A message. Or perhaps a warning.
Say what you want about The Last Jedi, but Rian Johnson crafted a complex and fascinating story for Luke Skywalker. You might not have liked his jaded attitude and ultimate fate at the end of the film, but the liberal changes allowed Mark Hamill to truly shine. Now the question is whether or not the character will return for J.J. Abrams' Episode IX. Fans are hoping he'll be back as a Force Ghost, especially since Carrie Fisher passed away before filming he role as Leia.
