A Glass Sequel? Let's Talk Out The Pros And Cons

SPOILER WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Glass. If you have not yet seen the film, read on at your own risk!

To be generous, M. Night Shyamalans Glass ends on a controversial note. Making a sharp left turn in the third act, the writer/director makes the call to not only kill all three of the main characters, but also introduce a secret society with a clandestine purpose involving superheroes. Acting as a conclusion to a trilogy, there is no question that the film brings an end to the story of David Dunn, the hero drowned in a shallow puddle by the group Ive dubbed the Black Clover Society, but at the same time the movie also inspires a complex debate: should this be the end of a franchise, or maybe the kick start of a new era that further explores the world?

The answer to this question is a complicated one regardless of how you feel about Glass but its a bit more difficult for those (like me) who were left feeling dissatisfied by where the new film leaves the story that began with Unbreakable back in 2000. From that perspective there arrives the first significant argument against the idea of continuation, which is that its not worth the risk to make a bad situation even worse.

M. Night Shyamalan had the chance to coalesce an exciting series with his follow-up to Split, but Glass being as shoddy as it is shouldnt be seen as motivation to give him another shot to fix it. Instead, one could make the argument that it instead just risks the legacy of the existing trilogy, which does still currently stand in a positive place from a pop culture perspective thanks to the strength of its first two chapters. In other words, it can very much been seen as a let sleeping dogs lie situation.

Considering that argument from a more optimistic point of view, however, even the most ardent critic of Glass will acknowledge that there are some interesting ideas that are left to explore in the film mostly because the existing movie doesnt do a great job exploring them itself. While not exactly explicit, there is strong suggestion from M. Night Shyamalan that there is a long history behind the Black Clover Society and the way in which they operate, and there is also left the very important question as to the full reasoning behind their existence.

Without having to jam everything into about 15 minutes of screen time, a sequel to Glass that isnt really a sequel to Glass could do a more in-depth look at the Black Clover Society and their purpose. Not only would this serve to potentially introduce even more real superheroes that exist in this particular world, with a variety of powers that go beyond super strength, but depending on the story it might even change the way we view the covert group, and in so doing perhaps change opinions on the 2019 film as well.

Then there is M. Night Shyamalans general future to think about. It took him a long time to regain the credibility that he lost with films like The Lady In The Water, The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth, but he had a strong thing going with both The Visit and Split. There is a lot of hope that we will ultimately look back on Glass as a hiccup on a strong road to redemption but the way to get there may not be by having him continue with a franchise that is now on shaky ground. For both the sake of his career, and the future of interesting original movies being made in Hollywood, it might just be best for the Eastrail 177 features to stop here.

Thanks to a solid opening weekend, Glass is already a financial success, which is all the motivation that Hollywood typically needs to feed sequel plans, but whether or not there actually should be a future is a debate that should continue for a while. We didnt even know we were getting an Unbreakable follow-up until it arrives in theaters two years ago, so well just have to wait and see what happens and in what directions M. Night Shyamalan decides to go.

First Look At Nicole Kidmans Atlanna In Aquaman

First Look At Nicole Kidmans Atlanna In Aquaman

Following his cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry made his full DC Extended Universe debut last year in Justice League, and his background were briefly touched upon. But it will be in the Aquaman movie later this year that Arthur's origins are deeply explored, and that will include meeting his mother, Queen Atlanna, played by Nicole Kidman. With six months to go until Aquaman's release, we finally have our first look at how Kidman will look as Atlantean royalty on the big screen.

Nicole Kidman already had some superhero movie experience under her belt with her role as Dr. Chase Meridian in 1995's Batman Forever. For Aquaman, though, she's playing someone who was already an established comic book character. As you can see on the EW magazine cover, Kidman's Atlanna, alongside Jason Momoa as Aquaman's eponymous protagonist and Amber Heard as Mera, certainly looks regal, though as Kidman mentioned last year, she can hold her own in a fight. The blonde hair is also in keeping with her usual depictions in the comics, although Atlanna in the New 52 continuity boasted pure white hair in the present day. The above cover is one of many Aquaman pictures that EW included in its new issue, which also included our first peek at Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Black Manta.

Just like in the DC Comics pages, Jason Momoa's iteration of Aquaman is the son of Atlanna, an Atlantean, and Thomas Curry, a human who's being played by Temuera Morrison in the upcoming movie. As we learned in Justice League, Atlanna was forced to give up Arthur (his Atlantean name being Orin) when she feared that his half-human, half-Atlantean heritage would place him in danger, and Arthur was subsequently raised by Thomas. Traditionally Atlanna eventually dies, but in the New 52 universe, it was revealed that she'd faked her death to escape Atlantis. It remains to be seen if Atlanna is still alive in the present day DCEU or if she died after handing young Arthur off to Thomas.

No specific plot details for Aquaman have been revealed yet, but the story will involve Arthur Curry finally embracing the Atlantean throne, only to have to prevent the Atlanteans from attacking the surface dwellers, who continue to pollute the seven seas. His's two chief adversaries in the movie will be his half-brother Orm, better known as Ocean Master (Atlanna is also his mother), and ruthless treasure hunter David Kane, a.k.a. Black Manta. Aquaman's lineup of characters also includes Atlantean advisor Nuidis Vulko, Xebellian king Nereus, Men-of-War leader Murk, Black Manta's father Jesse Kane and Dr. Stephen Shin.

Aquaman will make a splash in theaters on December 21. For all the latest updates concerning the underwater blockbuster and other upcoming DC movies, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Arachnophobia Is Getting A Remake

Arachnophobia Is Getting A Remake

Arachnophobia is defined as the irrational fear of spiders and arachnids. It is in fact, a quite rational affliction, suffered by, I imagine, the majority of people on the planet. It is also the name of a 1990 horror-comedy film from director Frank Marshall starring Jeff Daniels, Harley Jane Kozack and John Goodman. Because fear of spiders is pretty universal and eternal, Arachnophobia is now getting a remake from Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment and James Wan's Atomic Monster production company.

The Arachnophobia remake is in the early stages right now, according to Deadline, and a writer has yet to be attached. James Wan, whose horror bona fides include Saw and The Conjuring, is increasingly in demand these days and will serve as producer on the Arachnophobia remake. He will not, however, be directing the film, and as of yet no director has been announced. Regardless, since there isn't even a script yet, there is plenty of time to find the right person.

The original Arachnophobia is about a South American killer spider that made its way into the U.S. inside of a coffin. The Amazonian spider produces infertile offspring with a house spider that goes on a killing spree. A few courageous individuals, knowing that the only good spider is a dead spider, go out to track down the queen spider before she can produce fertile offspring that would send the planet into a dark age ruled by killer spiders.

I'm quite curious about what shape this remake will take. On the one hand, I don't see the need for a remake, but maybe this will be a loose remake that is simply trying to capitalize on whatever small name recognition there is for a nearly 30-year-old film. A lot of people are afraid of spiders, so that is certainly ripe territory to mine for an original horror story. Being a remake with the Arachnophobia name though, I'm really hoping that it maintains the comedic elements of the original.

The ongoing horror renaissance has seen the genre enjoying critical and commercial success with scary, thought-provoking and creatively compelling films, but horror comedies haven't really taken part in this resurgence. On TV, shows like Ash Vs. Evil Dead have been carrying the torch for horror comedy; still, I'd really like to see the big screen side of things bring some humor back to horror. Along with the possible upcoming Zombieland 2, an Arachnophobia remake seems like a good way to do that.

As for James Wan, he may next be involved in the adaptation of Stephen King's novel, The Tommyknockers, and he will be executive producing the Swamp Thing TV series for DC's new streaming service. Before that though, this fall sees the release of his DC film Aquaman on December 21st. To see everything hitting theaters the rest of this year, check out our release schedule. Plus, for all the latest in irrational fears, stay tuned to CinemaBlend.

Arachnophobia has to be one of the most underrated creature features of all-time. The 1990 film managed to be both a thrilling B-movie as well as a parody of the genre, while also boasting a cast that included the likes of Jeff Daniels and John Goodman, and yet no one ever talks about.

This Rotten Week: Predicting Black Panther, Early Man And Samson Reviews

This Rotten Week: Predicting Black Panther, Early Man And Samson Reviews

When it comes to major, hit blockbusters, 2018 has been largely lacking thus far. We've seen a month and a half pass mostly filled with dumped studio pictures and misfires. That all changes this Friday, however. After months (and for some people, years) of anticipation, Black Panther is ready to make its way to the big screen - but we also get Early Man and Samson.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Black Panther, the 18th film from Marvel Studios falls in the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline after the events of Captain America: Civil War - the film that introduced us to the big screen version of T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and immediately got us pumped for the hero's solo adventure. The new film finds the titular protagonist head back to Wakanda to presume the duties of king following the assassination of his father - but it's an ascension that winds up being timed with the arrival of a mysterious foreign figure with plans to introduce some chaos in the African nation.

Director Ryan Coogler has a fantastic track record that's scaled up along his projects. He started with Fruitvale Station (94%), hit the mainstream with Creed (95%), and now has critics sitting right in the same range with Black Panther. At the time that this article is being published, the movie has a 97% with 95 reviews counted. This looks like another fantastic entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and I predict the score will only go up from where it currently is.

Aardman Animations' catalog is impressive with films like Chicken Run (97%), Shaun the Sheep (99%), Arthur Christmas (92%), and Wallace & Grommit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (95%). Those are scores you don't typically see from an animation studio outside of Pixar. The short-list for quality animation studios is just that, andAardman is right up there with their stop animation work. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Early Man is going to be putting up a score super close to those titles.

Critics are a little more bearish on Early Man than the studios' other work, with the Tomatometer sitting in the low 80's after about 40 reviews have been submitted. I don't think it will make any huge gains over the course of the week, but I also don't expect it to sink too much lower either. I think it will still be another win for the studio which is just putting out hits time and time again.

I'm just going to the "cut" right to the chase of this "hair"-brained idea for a movie, based on the classic tale of Samson from the Bible. It looks horrible. There are movies that should be made into big budget epics with all the right cast members and a requisite budget, and then there are artsy films that can get by on their story and superb screenwriting. Where you never want to be is in between. That's a death knell for a flick and a one-way ticket to the bottom of the Tomatometer. Samson looks like an in-betweener.

Frankly, this movie looks like the worst of all worlds: an action film with some biblical overtones that struggles to even put together a reasonable trailer because the film likely lacks any sort of actual gravity, along with some cheaply-made action scenes that appear wholly generic. I can't imagine it finishes above 25%.

It was not a great week for the Rotten Watch last time around no matter which way you spin it. I missed on two of the three movies, and epically bad on one of them. Let's start with the win first. Fifty Shades Freed (Predicted: 10% Actual: 11%) finished in the complete gutter. It wasn't all that hard to see this one coming considering the last chapter in the franchise finished at a whopping 10%. The books were terrible, and so are the movies. It doesn't take genius to predict these kinds of results.

Clint Eastwood's The 15:17 to Paris (Predicted: 68% Actual: 20%) on the other hand, was a disaster from both a critical and predictive standpoint. It's one thing to miss by a few percentage points, but it's another thing to just have the completely wrong feel for a movie. That was the case here, as I whiffed badly. The major complaint from critics was the script, which many felt fell flat as compared the gravity of the actual incident on the train. Most felt like casting the actual heroes was the right move, but the rest of the screenplay didn't do the story justice. It ends up as one of the worst-reviewed big releases of the young year.

Finally, Peter Rabbit (Predicted: 41% Actual: 58%) was another miss. I was working more off the studio's track record in animated films and less of the possible chances from what I saw in the trailer. That appears to have been a mistake. This one finished with the majority of critics giving it a pass, but it still couldn't earn a Fresh rating.

Next time around we've got a big one with Annihilation, Game Night and Every Day. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!
