Laura Dern Just Dropped A Bomb About Holdo In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

It's been months since Star Wars: The Last Jedi flew into theaters, and fans and cinephiles haven't stopped dissecting every frame. Rian Johnson delivered a subversive sequel that shattered expectations, he'll soon dive into a trilogy of his own. In addition to the returning characters, Johnson introduced a trio of newcomers, including Laura Dern's Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo. Holdo played a major role in the survival of The Resistance, and was featured in one of the most stunning sequences in the movie. But it turns out that there's something we didn't know about her: she's actually Force sensitive. Laura Dern dropped this bomb herself, saying:

In their minds, and in their understanding of the origin story, we know that she was a true rebel in the Resistance, and in our culture we might have called her a hippie. But she was longing for peace, and a revolutionary in that way, and wanted to be trained by and led by Leia, who taught her everything she knew. She wanted to come up in the ranks to support Leia's mission, but also had this otherworldly side that does involve the Force.

It looks like a ton of thought went into Holdo's backstory in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, whether or not it actually was shown on screen. While we never saw Amilyn Holdo use any Force abilities or swing a lightsaber, it appears that she was indeed connected to The Force, and perhaps a closer ally to Leia than we thought.

Laura Dern's comments to EW definitely helped flesh out the new character, which was an intriguing presence in The Last Jedi. Her conflict with Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron was both fascinating and a point of contention from within the community. Why couldn't she just tell Poe about her plan, and therefore avoid the mutiny? Ultimately her ending helped redeem the character, and the idea that she has a connection to The Force only helps make her more interesting.

Overall, Star Wars: The Last Jedi made a bunch of interesting changes to The Force, and what powers could be learned from proper training. While Luke was able to manifest a vision of himself all the way on Crait, Leia changed the game early into the sequel's runtime. When she was able to survive the vacuum of safe, Leia proved herself more adept in the ways of The Force than we'd ever seen her during the original trilogy. If Holdo was in many ways Leia's protegee, did she too have these abilities? She's not going to come back to life anytime soon, but it may explain why she had such a strong character and sense of self during her short tenure on the franchise.

Since Michael Caine has almost 200 acting credits, theres bound to be a few duds. The distinguished 85-year-old actor recently reflected on the one role he might tell his younger self to pass on if he could: it was the 1978 disaster flick The Swarm. He just couldnt get along with his bee costars. Heres what Caine said:

One day we were all having a conversation with live bees above us, and suddenly we noticed all these little black dots on our shirts. The bees were shitting on us. And so the first review was in, but we didnt know it at the time.

Yikes! I dont blame him, working with live bees sounds terrifying even though the fact that they pooped on them is a hilarious visual and a great reason why a live-action Bee Movie should never exist.

In Michael Caines recent interview with Rolling Stone, he expressed that he has little regret about the roles he didnt take, because he seldom would say no to a role. Caines open-mindedness to his roles likely contributed to his over-60 year massively successful acting career that still is very much ticking today. Saying yes more can lead to some rather interesting experiences.

In the case of The Swarm, Michael Caine said yes because of the star-studded cast involving Henry Fonda, Olivia de Havilland and Jose Ferrer. He didnt even read the script, he just went for it and in turn became part of one of the most best bad movies of all time. Just take a look at this highlight reel from the thriller:

The Swarm is about a swarm of killer bees who fly from South America to Houston, Texas to raise terror on the town. It was directed by Irwin Allen, who produced classic sci-fi television shows of the 60s including Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. It was a box office bomb and critical failure, but it was named one of the most enjoyably bad movies ever made by Razzie Award founder John J.B. Wilson.

Even so, The Swarm adds to Michael Caines incredible range. Hes done everything from frequenting Christopher Nolan movies to starring as Scrooge in The Muppet Christmas Carol. Thats just in recent years though; starting in the 60s, Caine became an unlikely British icon and movie star.

When he first found his role on screen transitioning from movie star, Caine contemplated retiring, but Jack Nicholson of all people convinced him otherwise, with the opportunity to become the character actor he is famous for being right now.

Michael Caine will star next as Lord Boresh in Medieval in 2019, which is about how a 14th century Czech warlord Jan Zizka (played by Ben Foster) defeated the Teutonic Order and Roman Empire.
