Would The Russo Brothers Ever Direct A Star Wars Movie? Heres What They Think

The Russo Brothers have proven themselves to be skilled at major franchise filmmaking. They've become the keepers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but once Avengers 4 is over, could they move on to another major film series? When directors become known for making blockbuster movies, they tend to get offered others, so it makes sense that the Russos could certainly end up on a short list for something like a future Star Wars movie. The pair was recently asked if they would be interested in doing that, and while they certainly showed a willingness to consider such a possibility, they would only do it if there was a story worth telling. According to Joe Russo...

I think we've just been part of the Marvel universe. And I think they're very respectful of Kevin and the Marvel universe. You know, when we're done telling stories in Marvel, then is there the opportunity to maybe go tell some other stories? We've not hidden the fact that Star Wars was a seminal experience like it was for everyone else. And that when The Empire Strikes Back came out, I sat in a theater from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and I watched it back-to-back-to-back. So I think we appreciate that universe as much as anyone. The question would be, 'Can we find a story to tell in it? And what is it?'

It sounds from the first part of what Joe Russo says on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast that nobody from Lucasfilm has been after them to direct a Star Wars movie because the studio is being respectful of Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios, and so it's not looking to poach them away. While it might seem like the fact that everything under the Disney umbrella is fair game, If Lucasfilm ends up finding success at the expense of Marvel, the bottom line to Disney is unchanged, and therefore it's not a benefit.

While we're still a year away from Avengers 4, principal photography on the project is already done which means that the Russos are that much closer to being done with Phase Three of the MCU. After that, it's hard to say what's in store for them. They surely can continue to make Marvel movies if they so choose, but if they'd like to work on something else, odds are they'll have their pick of projects.

How At Eternitys Gate Will Change Your Vision Of Vincent Van Gogh, According To Willem Dafoe

When most people think about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, they don't exactly conjure positive images. Part of the legendary artist's legacy is the fact that his work was widely disregarded in his time, and after dying a poor man his paintings became recognized as some of the greatest art ever put to canvas. It's a part of the story recognized in Julian Schnabel's new Van Gogh biopic, At Eternity's Gate, but there's much more to the tale than the base trivia. As star Willem Dafoe points out, it's also eye-opening just how prolific the man was during the final years of his life:

In the period that we deal with he was so productive, it kind of shatters the idea of him as the poor tortured artist. Ears cutting off and all that thrown into the mix, but he was on fire. He was creating... I don't remember how many paintings - like a painting every day. And of course he had lots of challenges, but he was in touch with the thing that he wanted to do. He was awake and that's what we all aspire to do.

Willem Dafoe delivers one of the best performances of his career in At Eternity's Gate, and I had the opportunity to discuss the project with him earlier this month during the film's Los Angeles press junket. During the interview I noted the general perception of Vincent Van Gogh -- a simultaneously tragic and renowned figure in the annals of history -- and asked how the actor's perception of him changed after his performance. The big thing he accentuated was just how productive he was, not only churning out hundreds of pieces, but also physically painting them all with great speed.

Based on a script by Jean-Claude Carrire, Louise Kugelberg, and Julian Schnabel, At Eternity's Gate depicts the life of Vincent Van Gogh in the last few years of his life, from 1888 to 1890. It was at this time that he moved from living with his brother to the small city of Arles in the south of France. It was during this time that produced some of his most famous and beautiful works, including the Night Cafe, Bedroom in Arles, Self-portrait with Bandaged Ear, and The Starry Night. However, while he was doing the greatest work of his career it was a period that also saw him suffer tremendously due to his mental illness, and suffer multiple incarcerations in psychiatric hospitals.

At Eternity's Gate and Willem Dafoe's performance are vivid in their depiction of Vincent Van Gogh's serious psychological issues, but also beautifully celebrate the man's incredible contribution to the art world. Not only does the narrative witness the creation many of his most incredible paintings, but also brings them to life through remarkable set design and cinematography. It's a fantastic piece of work, and a tremendous tribute.

For its third movie, the DC Extended Universe opted to turn its attention away from traditional superheroes and focus on criminals who are coerced into saving the world. The Suicide Squad has been a mainstay in the DC Comics universe since the late 1980s, and while the 2016 movie was a critical dud, it ultimately proved itself to be a box office success, making over $746 million worldwide. Suicide Squad 2 is now in active development, but according to Joel Kinnman, who play Colonel Rick Flag, Warner Bros is taking its time with the sequel because it doesn't want to repeat the mistakes that the first movie made. When asked when he thinks he might see a script or learn when Suicide Squad 2 starts shooting, Kinnaman answered:

I don't know. I just know they are working intensely on it. I know it's a big priority at Warner Bros., but it's an equally big priority to get it right. We all felt that we had lightning in a bottle, in a way, and it partly got away from us, a little bit. It's really important to harness everything that was great about it, and then fix what didn't really work. So, I know they're working on it, and we'll see.

Rushing a movie is never a good idea, but in this day and age when many superhero movies and other blockbusters are given firm release dates, sometimes that's just the problem that pops up. For Suicide Squad, its August 5, 2016 release date was already in place when David Ayer, the director and writer, came aboard, so he only had six weeks to pen the script so that production would begin on schedule. It sounds like Warner Bros has learned its lesson for Suicide Squad 2, as the sequel has yet to be officially dated. And as Joel Kinnaman told Collider, it's also important that Suicide Squad 2 nail down the Suicide Squad elements that worked and toss out what didn't. If stretching out the creative process results in a better follow-up, then by all means, take that extra time.

Right now, Suicide Squad 2 is reportedly expected to start rolling cameras this fall, though that could possibly change down the line. With David Ayer working on Gotham City Sirens (as well as returning for Netflix's Bright 2), Suicide Squad 2 directing duties have been passed to The Accountant's Gavin O'Connor, and The Legend of Tarzan's Adam Cozad is penning the script. Along with Joel Kinnaman reprising Rick Flag, Will Smith's Deadshot, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Jared Leto's Joker and Jai Courtney's Boomerang are also expected to return. It also looks like Jay Hernandez might be back as Diablo, which is interesting considering that he died in Suicide Squad. No official plot details for Suicide Squad 2 have been released, but it was reported last November that the sequel could see the team of government-supervised villains going to Kahndaq to battle Black Adam, who has been labeled a weapon of mass destruction.
