Alan Rickman Grew Frustrated With Playing Snape In The Harry Potter Movies

While Alan Rickman played numerous great roles in his career, to many he will always be thought of first and foremost as Severus Snape from the Harry Potter franchise. While the general impression has always been that he was very proud of the role that he played over eight films, some newly released letters show that the part wasn't without its frustrations for the actor. One letter, that was written to the actor by producer David Heyman, shows that Rickman's frustrations started as early as the second Harry Potter movie. Written in Heyman's letter...

Thank you for making HP2 a success. I know, at times, you are frustrated but please know that you are an integral part of the films. And you are brilliant.

The frustrations apparently continued from there and were still an issue during Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, as the Independent reprints part of a letter Rickman himself wrote which is critical of director David Yates for the way Rickman felt he neglected Snape's storyline as unimportant in order to focus on teen audience appeal.

These remarks come from a collection of Alan Rickman's letters which were being made public before going up for auction. While these might be just a couple of minor cases where Alan Rickman expressed frustration at playing Professor Snape, they show another side to a performance which is generally praised as one of the highlights of the franchise. There were few indications that Rickman had these feelings, so they may have been minor in the grand scheme of things. Clearly, the comments by producer David Heyman are referencing some specific feelings that Rickman had expressed to him at some point previously.

It's not clear exactly what caused the occasional frustration, and it obviously wasn't important enough to become a bigger issue, but it's interesting nonetheless. Alan Rickman's comments about David Yates could point to a conflict between Rickman as an actor and the more commercial aspects of the Harry Potter franchise as a whole. What Rickman was looking for as an actor to help him create the best possible performance is just one piece of a larger machine at the higher levels. Ultimately, the Harry Potter movies need to please a massive fan base so it wouldn't be surprising if Rickman, or some of the other actors, felt like they were getting lost in the shuffle.

Ultimately, Alan Rickman made all eight movies and the fans love the part that he did create. If nothing else, doing so allowed him to treat himself and his friends well, since the part made him a lot of money, and there's certainly something to be said for that.

The Russo Brothers Have Deleted Almost All Of Their Social Media Ahead Of Infinity War

This week is a major one for sci-fi fans and casual cinephiles alike. Because in just a few short days, The Russo Brothers' Avengers: Infinity War will arrive in theaters. The blockbuster will be the summation of 10 years and 18 movies, and the anticipation and near anxiety coming from the final days of waiting is enough to drive most Marvel fans bonkers. Reception from its world premiere has been very high, and the directors have urged fans to stay off of social media to avoid spoilers. Now The Russos are taking their own advice, as they've all but deleted their long history on Twitter.

The Russo Brothers' joint Twitter account is a verified way for fans to directly interact with the directors. While busy crafting an epic story with myriad beloved characters, the Brothers have always been fairly generous on social media, answering questions and breaking the internet with the power of one tweet. The page now is in stark juxtaposition to its usual appearance, with their icon blacked out and only one single tweet and a handful of replies visible.

The decision to almost completely deactivate the Russo Brothers' account is no doubt another grab Infinity War hype, but it also seems to stand in solidarity with the pledge they urged fans to take just yesterday. Early screenings are now showing all over the country, so there will be plenty of opportunities for trolls to spoil the film's contents. The Russos and Anthony Mackie himself have maintained that not reading up is the answer, but that's easier said than done for the rabid fandom.

Social media is no doubt going to become a mine field of spoilers, especially as the coming weekend rolls on. Why The Star Wars Spinoffs Excite Ron Howard

The Star Wars franchise is a sprawling galaxy with virtually unlimited characters who can go on a broad range of adventures. Now with spinoff films diverging from the main trilogy, Lucasfilm can tell all of the stories that it wants. I asked Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard about that during the recent Solo press day in Los Angeles, and while he admitted that he doesn't think about specific stories that he wants to see in the Star Wars universe, he's excited by the sheer variety of storytelling in this world. Howard told us:

Well, I haven't had time to think too much about all of that, and I'm a fan, but I'm not somebody who lies awake at night kind of wishing for the next one of these or those. I really think there are a lot of corners of this galaxy that could be explored. I know fans say, 'Why do we need to go there or why do we need to go to this other direction?' But good storytellers can take inspiration from all of this, almost like it's a, this is a real world. It's like saying 'How many times can we do a story about the Renaissance? How many times can we do a World War II story?' I mean the reality is there are fascinating characters and a lot of drama.

When he frames it like that, it makes more sense. The Star Wars franchise is not limited to a specific group of characters, and there's technically no limit to the places and eras that directors can take these stories. We could see a period piece, a war film, a comedy and a sports movie, and they could all take place within the greater Star Wars universe. It's that lack of limits that excites Ron Howard, and it's clear evidence that this franchise could potentially go on forever.

This is something that other properties seem to have figured out in recent years as well. Specifically, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen great success by injecting characters into genres that fit their styles, such as a heist movie for Ant-Man or a political thriller for Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now the Star Wars series has similarly embraced different creative approaches, and that decision has opened up a new realm of storytelling avenues.

Looking specifically at Solo: A Star Wars Story, the Star Wars universe has done something particularly unique by offering up a crime caper filled with action set pieces that specifically inform Han's development as a character. Ron Howard continued in his conversation with CinemaBlend and explained:

What I liked about this opportunity for me personally was that it was really character-driven. Even the action set pieces, while every Star Wars in their nature and with the intensity, each and every one is designed as a test for young Han Solo. That's really what it's all about. The relationships, which are really important to this which offer a lot of real great performance opportunities for some great actors, that's a little bit unusual for a Star Wars movie to pin that much on those human relationships. For me, as a director, it was fun to combine those elements.
