Why Zoe Kravitz Was Thrilled To Play Leta Lestrange In Crimes of Grindelwald

Why Zoe Kravitz Was Thrilled To Play Leta Lestrange In Crimes of Grindelwald

In a moviemaking market dominated by the superhero genre, there's another major franchise that doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon: Harry Potter. J.K Rowling's Wizarding World has helped to define pop culture since her acclaimed and record breaking novels hit in the 1990's, and has continued to stay relevant in the decades since.

Aside from multiple amusement parks and Cursed Child plays playing on Broadway and the West End, the magical world of Harry Potter is being expanded through the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise. The prequel series has a five movie plan, with the first sequel arriving in November with The Crimes of Grindelwald. New characters are being introduced, including Zoe Kravtiz's Leta Lestrange. Kravitz recently explained why she was so thrilled to take the role, saying:

I thought it was really important. And this takes places in the 1920s, so what was it like to be a person of color in this world at this time? She might have been one of the only children of color in Hogwarts at that time. She's an outcast and whether it's spoken about or not, I associate that, of course, partly with what she looks like. I think they were mostly only auditioning women of color for this role. I know it was an important thing for Jo. She was very aware of what she was doing.

Aside from the opportunity to join a major franchise and become an even more high profile actress, it seemed that Zoe Kravitz's venture into the Wizarding World meant something special to her. Playing Leta Lestrange helps to diversify the franchise, and tell a story that directly relates to the muggle world we all live in.

Zoe Kravitz's comments from her recent interview with LA Times help to flesh out the actress' intentions with becoming a member of the legendary Lestrange family. But more than that, it also potentially teases the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. Because aside from her role in the action and main narrative, it seems that Leta's part will also address issues of race.

The Harry Potter franchise generally likes to keep its secrets, so each movie and play is largely a mystery before it hits theaters. Leta Lestrange has only been seen in a few brief shots of the trailers, and teased to have a romantic relationship with both Newt Scamander and his brother Theseus. But Zoe Kravitz's role will also shine a light on race issues, including within magical society. Race has never really been a subject in the Wizarding World, so The Crimes of Grindelwald has yet another opportunity to break new ground for J.K. Rowling's beloved universe.

The Harry Potter books may have become originally popular by encouraging children to read, the story always had dark and complicated themes. J.K. Rowling made complex issues accessible for all ages, including the feelings of being out of place, having a bad family life, and dealing with trauma and loss. And with Rowling continuing to develop the Wizarding World through new works, she can allow it to change with the times and encourage conversation around race.

How Leta Lestrange's race factors into the plot of The Crimes of Grindelwald remains to be seen, but Zoe Kravitz and J.K Rowling clearly have a very specific intention for the character, including how a black witch in the 1920's would function in society. It's doubly fascinating since Leta belongs to the Lestrange family, who is known for being obsessed with its "pure" Wizarding Blood line-- and would eventually spawn infamous witches like Bellatrix Lestrange.

This isn't the first time J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World has related to the muggle world, and addressed issues seen in contemporary society. After the Harry Potter novels were all released and the films franchise was in full affect, Rowling revealed what Albus Dumbledore was actually a gay man. While Dumbledore's never had a romantic plot line or opportunity to show this aspect of his character, the revelation angered certain fans of Hogwarts, and was a shocker for most.

Both of these issues may end up having a part in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, as Jude Law will be playing a younger version of Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming sequel. While the bulk of the story should be about tracking down and stopping Johnny Depp's villainous title character, Zoe Kravitz's statements make it clear that J.K Rowling is putting new types of stories into the still budding franchise. Luckily for Harry Potter fans, they won't have to wait long before getting answers, as The Crimes of Grindelwald will arrive shortly.

There's actually been a fair amount of controversy surrounding Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ahead of its release, so the pressure is on for the sequel to really deliver in both quality and box office performance. It began before the film was even filming, as Johnny Depp was cast as the title character, after making a brief appearance in the first film's third act. But when Depp's ex-wife Amber Heard made allegations of domestic violence, fans took umbrage with his inclusion in the franchise. But J.K. Rowling herself defended the casting decision, so Depp's role was filmed in its entirety.

When the final trailer for The Crimes of Grindelwald was released, it was revealed that the sequel would include a human version of Nagini, Voldemort's murderous pet snake and Horocrux. While this offered the opportunity to expand the canon and explain Nagini's connection to the Dark Lord, some had a problem with Asian actress Claudia Kim playing a servant. But Kim herself has defended her upcoming role as Nagini, and encouraged naysayers to see the movie in its entirety before passing judgement.

Luckily for fans, naysayers, and muggles alike, all of the wondering and questions will soon be coming to an end. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will arrive in theaters on November 16th, 2019, complete with Zoe Kravtiz's mysterious Leta Lestrange. In the meantime, be sure to check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

Leonardo DiCaprio Circling Role In New Guillermo Del Toro Movie

Leonardo DiCaprio Circling Role In New Guillermo Del Toro Movie

Leonardo DiCaprio is one of those actors who will get the chance to work with just about all of the greatest filmmakers of our time. The Oscar-winner has collaborated with Christopher Nolan, Alejandro Irritu, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, the list goes on. And the list might be getting longer, because the actor is reportedly in talks to star in Guillermo del Toros next project, titled Nightmare Alley.

The filmmaker, best known for stylized films such as Pans Labyrinth and Crimson Peak, has been taking a year off from directing, but he's set to make a strong return with a coming adaptation of thriller Nightmare Alley, based on the 40s noir by William Lindsay Gresham. Leonardo DiCaprio would star as conman Stanton Stan Carlisle, who pairs up with a female psychologist to swindle people into giving them their riches.

Guillermo del Toro has penned the script with Kim Morgan, and he will produce the film with frequent collaborator J. Miles Dale for Fox Searchlight, according to Deadline. The novel was previously adapted into a movie in 1947 starring Tyrone Power, but the upcoming Nightmare Alley is said to be drawing more from the source material than serving as a remake to the previous film.

Nightmare Alley is scheduled to begin shooting in the fall, amongst del Toros other high-profile project, a new Pinocchio movie for Netflix. The streaming service is backing the project for the writer/director, which will be a new take on the fairytale that is set behind fascist Italy. Disney was previously to add the tale to its live-action slate starring Tom Hanks as Geppetto, but it has since reportedly been cancelled, maybe due to competition with del Toros vision.

Guillermo del Toro was recently recognized with a Best Picture win for his 2017 girl meets fish romance The Shape of Water. He has since been producing his upcoming horror film Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark and Antlers.

Leonardo DiCaprio is infamously choosy about what roles he signs on for. His last role was all the way back in 2015 for The Revenant. The actor will soon return to the big screen for Quentin Tarantinos highly-anticipated next film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as a 60s television actor named Rick Dalton. He will also team back up with Martin Scorsese for an adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon and potentially for a Theodore Roosevelt biopic.

If the actor joins Nightmare Alley, it will certainly be the highest-profile collaboration Guillermo del Toro has opted for, since the director has usually hired lesser-known actors in his prior films. Its an exciting project to look forward to, especially the idea of DiCaprio and del Toro taking on the noir genre together.

The Chucky Creator Was Offended By The Upcoming Remake

The Chucky Creator Was Offended By The Upcoming Remake

Other than superheroes, two of the hottest trends going in Hollywood right now are horror and nostalgia. Thus classic horror characters are getting rebooted in a big way to capitalize on that trend, and Chucky is next. But unlike this year's Halloween, which involved John Carpenter, Chucky creator Don Mancini will not be involved in the Child's Play remake, in fact, he was offended by it, as he explained:

MGM retained the rights to the first movie, so they're rebooting that. They asked [producer] David Kirschner and I if we wanted to be executive producers. We said no thank you, because we have our ongoing thriving business with Chucky. Obviously my feelings were hurt. Ya know, I had just done two movies... forgive me if I sound defensive, [they] were both at 83% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though they didn't get theatrical releases, they were well regarded. And I did create the character and nurture the franchise for three fucking decades.

As you can tell, this is a tricky situation thanks to the somewhat complicated rights of Child's Play and the Chucky character. Child's Play creator and franchise writer Don Mancini still has a business with the Chucky character, but MGM owns the rights to the first film, and that's what it is remaking.

This offended Don Mancini and hurt his feelings because it's not like Chucky and Child's Play have been gone since the 1988 original. While MGM is remaking the first film, Don Mancini has been continuing the franchise with Chucky movies and recently too.

The movies Don Mancini referred to in his conversation with Mick Garris on the Post Mortem podcast are 2013's Curse of Chucky and 2017's Cult of Chucky. Both of those films, while not theatrical releases, do indeed have 83% fresh ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, albeit from a small number of reviews.

As you might expect, Don Mancini has a very personal connection to the character he created so he naturally feels a sense of ownership over him and has a vested interest, personal and financial, in what is done with him.

Don Mancini and series producer David Kirschner were asked to executive produce the new film, but they weren't interested, with Don Mancini seeing the offer as something of a hollow gesture. He elaborated:

So when someone says, 'Oh yeah, we would love to have your name on the film'... it was hard not to feel like I was being patronized. They just wanted our approval. Which I strenuously denied them. I hesitate to say too much about it because I don't want to sound like I'm belly-aching too much. But the producers of that movie are the producers of IT. How would they feel if there was some legal loophole that allowed David Kirschner and I to swoop in and make our own IT movie with our own version of Pennywise and say, 'Hey guys, we would love to put your names on it.' I imagine they wouldn't like it. That's how I feel. The people who are making that movie, they don't know how that's going to affect my livelihood. It's not just a paycheck. It's very personal.

Putting it like that and offering that hypothetical situation as an analog, you can definitely see why Don Mancini was offended. He took the offer to be an executive producer on the new Child's Play as a case of MGM not asking for his blessing or wanting his creative input, but just wanting his endorsement.

MGM was going to make the movie regardless, and is, but the way he saw it, MGM wanted his name and that of David Kirschner as a way to legitimize this upcoming remake by slapping on the names of the original creators. Don Mancini and David Kirschner denied MGM this.

More than just being offended, Don Mancini takes this personal because he created the character of Chucky and he sees the Child's Play reboot as something that could potentially undercut his business. With competing Chuckys out there, one may cannibalize the other and as a theatrical movie with major stars, the MGM one will certainly get a leg up in the awareness department.

Unfortunately, while you never want to see a situation like this, that is the nature of the business and sometimes creative ownership and legal ownership are not one in the same. Nevertheless, for fans of the characters, there will be multiple options to get your killer doll fix. While MGM is working on a remake of the first film, Don Mancini is bringing Chucky to the small screen in a new TV series.

MGM's Child's Play remake stars Aubrey Plaza and Brian Tyree Henry, and is directed by Lars Klevberg. Child's Play slashes its way on to theater screens on June 21, 2019. What You Need To Know About Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

What You Need To Know About Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic

Although things are slowing down on the theatrical front for a bit, there is still a ton of Star Wars headed our way in the future. There are multiple films from both David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and Rian Johnson on the way after this years Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker wraps up the Skywalker Saga.

That may not be all though, because if a new report is accurate, a movie based on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video game is also in the works. According to the report, Laeta Kalogridis, co-writer of Alita: Battle Angel and creator of Netflixs Altered Carbon, is close to finishing the first script of a potential Knights of the Old Republic trilogy.

A Knights of the Old Republic trilogy is huge news because the Old Republic is something die-hard Star Wars fans have been calling for since Disney took over Lucasfilm and started making new movies set in a galaxy far, far away. But not everyone played the Knights of the Old Republic video game or is familiar with Star Wars stories outside the films, and thus have no idea why this is exciting news.

So here is a rundown of what you need to know about Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The Games (And Comics)Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was released on the original Xbox and PC in 2003. The role-playing game from BioWare and LucasArts is a 40-hour epic written by Drew Karpyshyn, who also wrote Mass Effect as well as five Star Wars novels, including the Darth Bane trilogy. KOTOR received universal acclaim and is considered to be the best Star Wars game ever made. Its also seen as one of the best role-playing games ever and one of the best video games of all time. Basically, there is a ton of love out there for Knights of the Old Republic.

Obsidian Entertainment teamed up with LucasArts to handle the sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II The Sith Lords, which was released in 2004. A third game, the massively multiplayer online RPG Star Wars: The Old Republic was released in 2011 that was set 300 years after the original games, but was impacted by those events and was still during the Old Republic time period.

There was also the Dark Horse comic series that ran for 50 issues from 2006-2010 and was set eight years prior to the first Knights of the Old Republic game. Additionally, there is the Star Wars: The Old Republic novel series, two titles of which were written by KOTORs Drew Karpyshyn. This is all to say that there are plenty of sources and ancillary materials for Laeta Kalogridis and Lucasfilm to draw upon for a Knights of the Old Republic movie.

The StoryThe story of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is its biggest claim to fame and why so many want to see it on the big screen. Set 4,000 years before the Galactic Empire and the events of the Skywalker Saga, KOTOR tells a story of Jedi and Sith when both are powerful forces in the galaxy with many in their ranks (this is before the Siths Rule of Two).

The opening crawl warns that the Republic is on the verge of collapse and under attack from Darth Malak, a Sith Lord and last surviving apprentice of the notoriously evil Darth Revan. Malak has released an armada against the Republic and countless Jedi are falling in battle, with some even falling to the Dark Side.

We learn that prior to the events of the game, Darth Malak and Darth Revan were both Jedi Knights who abandoned the Order to fight for the Republic in the Mandalorian Wars. The two became heroes, but following the end of those wars, they went into the Unknown Regions where they fell under the influence of the leader of the Sith Empire. The two returned as Sith and battled the Jedi and the Republic, but eventually Darth Malak turned on his master, firing upon his ship and usurping Revans position.

The game begins with the player assuming the role of a soldier of the Galactic Republic who wakes up aboard the Endar Spire, a ship in the Outer Rim, as it comes under attack. The player eventually crosses paths with Bastila Shan, the Jedi Knight sent to capture Malak and Revan when they returned from the Unknown Regions.

Alongside Bastila Shan, the player seeks to put together a star map that can lead them to Darth Malak and the Star Forge, a superweapon speculated to be the source of much of his power. Its a 40-hour game, so a lot happens, but the player travels to multiple planets like Tatooine, Dantooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan and Korriban, coming into contact with a wide cast of characters in the fight to stop Darth Malak and save the galaxy.

The TwistPart of what makes the story of Knights of the Old Republic so special is a twist that ranks up there in Star Wars storytelling with the No, I am your father moment from The Empire Strikes Back. Spoilers for a 16-year-old game ahead! During the course of the game, the player learns that his or her true identity is none other than Darth Revan, the Dark Lord presumed dead when Darth Malak fired upon his masters ship.

Bastila Shan and her strike team were on Revans ship to capture him when Malak fired upon the ship, trying to kill his friend and master. Darth Malak almost succeeded as Revan was gravely wounded. But Bastila Shan saved him and took him to the Jedi Council on Dantooine. There, Revans memories were wiped and he was brainwashed into believing that he was a Republic soldier. The hope being that eventually, through the Force bond Bastila and Revan shared after she saved his life, they could use him to discover the location of the Star Forge and help destroy the Sith.

Its a huge reveal that sets up a forking path for Revan. Should the player choose Dark Side choices, he or she will usurp Malak at game's end and reclaim the title of Dark Lord of the Sith, seeking new dominion over the galaxy. If the player remains in the light, he or she will destroy the Star Forge, defeat Darth Malak and be hailed as a hero and welcomed back into the Jedi Order as the Prodigal Knight.

The CharactersA major aspect of Knights of the Old Republics compelling story is that it is following a rich, diverse cast of fun characters that the player cares about. Revan, a human male, is a fascinatingly complex character in the Star Wars mythos because he has lived on both sides of the Dark/Light spectrum and everywhere in between. There is a reason he remains a fan favorite despite no longer being part of official canon.

Darth Malak is merciless and powerful, everything you could want in a Sith Lord. Bastila Shan is one of Star Wars great female characters, a confident and skilled Jedi Knight with the incredible Force power of Battle Meditation. The power allows her to boost the morale, stamina and courage of her allies, helping them to act as one, quickly and efficiently, while simultaneously demoralizing and striking fear in the hearts of the enemy.

Other characters include the skilled Republic pilot Carth Onasi, the Mandalorian mercenary Canderous Ordo, the cheery Twilek teen Mission Vao, the Wookie Zaalbar, the Gray Jedi Jolee Bindo and the fan favorite, and K-2SO predecessor for droid snark, the assassin droid HK-47. They are all great characters that put faces to the galaxys conflicts and make the universe feel bigger.

Possibilities For The FilmWhat all of this means for the movie it is too early to say. I think the biggest question is whether or not this is a real adaptation of the Knights of the Republic video game. The initial report said that Laeta Kalogridis was writing a script based on that game, but the cynic in me thinks that leaves a lot of wiggle room for a Knights of the Old Republic movie to have a different story.

As evidenced by the jettisoning of the Expanded Universe, Lucasfilm under Disney has shown a reticence to adapt existing material, instead choosing to tell entirely new stories where all audiences are on an even footing knowledge-wise and no one knows the story in advance. So I could totally see a Knights of the Old Republic movie simply being a story set during the Old Republic time period that takes inspiration from KOTOR, but not one that has the same story of Revan and Darth Malak.

That would be a shame though, because as Game of Thrones showed, you can adapt material where some of the audience already knows the story beats and still have success. If anything, the experience of watching that show was enhanced because some audience members knew what was coming in advance, making Neds death and the Red Wedding all the more fun. The same could be true for the truth about Revan.

Lucasfilm has cherry-picked non-canon elements from the EU before (like Grand Admiral Thrawn appearing in Star Wars Rebels), so maybe thats possible here. Hopefully it does more than cherry-pick though, because Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is one of the most beloved Star Wars tales for a reason and it has all the necessary ingredients to make for a awesome big screen trilogy.

Well keep you updated on all the various Star Wars trilogies in the works as we hear about them. You can next revisit a galaxy far, far away when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20.
