How Benedict Cumberbatch's The Grinch Is Doing Compared To Jim Carrey's Version

How the Grinch Stole Christmas is as beloved as it comes, whether it's the children's book, the animated TV special, or (for some generations) the 2000's live-action movie. It's no surprise then that the latest retelling of the story, this month's The Grinch from animation powerhouse Illumination, is already a hit at the box office. The animated movie is projected to bring in $66.2 million this weekend, which is an improvement over the last theatrical release of the classic tale.

Per Deadline, The Grinch got off to a solid start after it pulled in $18.3 million on Friday. Veteran's Day is coming up on Sunday, which means a ton of kids will have the day off from school on Monday. That extra moviegoing spillover will help boost The Grinch's opening even higher. As such, the film is currently projected to wrap the long weekend with $66 million.

That number is an improvement over 2000's How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which had a debut of $55 million. That live-action film was led by Jim Carrey in full Grinch makeup and directed by Ron Howard. While not too beloved by critics, the movie has a following from kids who grew up while it was in theaters.

That's the situation that The Grinch finds itself in as well. Critics have been split on the film, giving it mixed feedback. The movie currently sits at 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the Jim Carrey version has a 52% fresh rating. However, both movies are geared toward families, and for what it's worth, they seem to be loving The Grinch. The animated movie has an A- CinemaScore and a solid 4 stars and an 83% overall positive on PostTrak.

The Grinch had a 43% youth turnout on Friday night, and kids seem to be lovin' it! Plus, the fact that the new movie comes from the house that created the Minions means that people are guaranteed a certain style and content quality.

Though the two are essentially the exact same story, the Grinch movies take different approaches on the classic material. Jim Carrey's version was as hammy as it gets, but also took itself a bit more seriously and tried to flesh out the backstory of the Grinch. The Benedict Cumberbatch-voiced animated movie also gives the Grinch a backstory, but the movie is very silly with Illumination's trademark slapstick humor thrown in for good measure.

One of the hot button issues in the entertainment world is the subject of proper inclusion and representation in the media. There has been a particular call for racial diversity and more dynamic roles for women, and that's exactly what upcoming heist film Ocean's 8 is going to provide. Director Gary Ross has assembled a fantastic cast of women to carry on the Ocean's franchise, with positive buzz surrounding the all-star group of actresses. Aside from the main cast, there are also a ton of celebrities making cameos as guests at the Met Gala. The cameos include the likes of Olivia Munn, Anna Wintour, and The Kardashians, and Ross recently told me how he managed such A-list extras with Ocean's 8.

We had a whole plan. At the Met Gala, all those people are famous, right? So I have an expectation on me to have famous extras, and that's not easy. We realized these people wouldn't come and be normal extras in a holding pen for eight hours. So we created a club upstairs in The Met in their member's dining room at night. We called it 'Club Oceans' and it was a party of all famous people hanging out, having a good time. And when we needed an extra we'd go upstairs and we'd pull someone out. There were cartier jewels that they could all put on and wear. There was good food. So they all got to go to a party.

Well, that's one way to get celebs in the room. While being a background actor isn't exactly glamorous, providing celebs with libations and designer jewelry is a great way to get them involved.

Ocean's 8 is set at the annual Met Gala, with Sandra Bullock's Debbie Ocean and her crew attempting to steal Cartier jewels worth $150 million. The Met Gala is the most exclusive party in the world, and anyone who is anyone attends the annual event, while wearing theatrical couture. In order for the big heist scene to function believably, Gary Ross needed to book some A-list talent as the party guests. And that's exactly what he did.

The trailers for Ocean's 8 features some of the movie's cameos, and there plenty of them. The movie will feature three members of the Kardashian/Jenner clan: Kim, Kylie, and Kendall. Anna Witnour is no doubt going to be heavily featured as the host of the event, while the extended cast also includes Zayn Malik, Serena Williams, Alexander Wang, and Katie Holmes. While the upcoming movie will be focused on the intricate heist, an added game for the audience will be identifying the myriad cameos throughout the film's conclusion.

The Hardest Scene Ant-Man Director Peyton Reed Ever Shot

In his time as a director, Peyton Reed has gone from helming TV documentaries and episodes of the Back to the Future animated series, to feature films like the teen classic Bring It On. In 2015, Peyton Reed made the jump to directing big budget superhero fare with Ant-Man, and now this weekend's Ant-Man and The Wasp. The latest MCU film is a blast, with great action set pieces that probably weren't easy to shoot. However, the most challenging scene Peyton Reed ever shot isn't in Ant-Man and the Wasp or its predecessor. The most difficult was actually the dinner scene in the 2006 comedy The Break-Up, as he explained:

One of the hardest things I ever had to shoot was in The Break-Up, the dinner table scene. It's a scene in The Break-Up where Jennifer Aniston's family is meeting Vince Vaughn's family for the first time, and it's a lot of characters and a lot of actors, and structurally it's a really long scene at this point in the movie. Servicing all these characters, I think, it took like three days to shoot this one dinner table scene.

This may not be the scene you would expect, but it is certainly a memorable one. The dinner scene is one of the most awkward and funny scenes in The Break-Up, as Vince Vaughn's Gary is squirming in his seat while John Michael Higgins' Richard sings in his face. A great scene to be sure, but its just a dinner scene with very little camera movement, how could this rom-com be more challenging than fight scenes and the Quantum Realm? Just watching the scene it might be hard to see what made it so difficult, but Peyton Reed further explained,

That's a weird thing, because it's not a car chase or something really technically complicated, but by the time you're on day three of a dinner table scene that's comedic, keeping everybody's energy fresh and in the moment --- because they've done the scene over and over, because you have to shoot it for each character --- that was one of the big ones.

There are nine characters sitting around a dinner table in the scene, which lasts for several minutes. As Peyton Reed elaborated to Syfy Wire, the sheer amount of coverage needed for the scene is part of what made it such a challenge. Every character needs to have their moments and be represented, which requires each of them to be shot from like 4 or 5 different angles in what is a fairly long scene. That means moving the cameras and changing lighting to make sure everyone looks their best... which takes a ton of time. Also, one of the primary jobs of a director is to get necessary performances out of the actors. As Peyton Reed recalled, after the third day of filming the same comedic scene, some of that spontaneity and energy gets zapped. So maintaining the sense of urgency and keeping the performances where they need to be is another major challenge.

Watching this after hearing Peyton Reed's explanation, you can begin to see how much this must have taken. There are single shots, two-shots, wide shots and over the shoulders. And with the dinner table setup, even the actors just on the edge of the frame or out of focus are still performing, so there's a lot to cover. This goes to show how even scenes that seem simple and aren't visually impressive can still be extremely difficult to film.

Ever since Justice League critically and commercially underperformed in theaters last fall, there's been a rallying cry from many fans of the DC Extended Universe for Warner Bros to release what's been called "The Snyder Cut," a version of the movie that better reflects director Zack Snyder's creative vision before he departed. It's been said that there's at least an assembly cut of Snyder's Justice League out there, but Warner Bros hasn't commented on the matter... until now. For those of you who've been hoping that the Snyder Cut would be made available to the public, I bring bad news, as it sounds like Warner Bros has no plans to release it.

With DC craving out its own chunk of the Warner Bros presentation at San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday, there'd been speculation online that some of that time would be dedicated to announcing the release of Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League. However, in a Wall Street Journal story about the Snyder Cut, a senior executive confirmed that there won't be any mention such a cut or any alternative versions of Justice League. In this crazy world, there's always the chance that the bigwigs at Warner Bros might change their minds and deliver an alternate Justice League cut at a later date. Remember, we didn't see the Richard Donner cut of Superman II until over two decades later. But for now, those of you who want to watch a live action Justice League movie will just have to turn to the theatrical cut.

Having already helmed Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder returned to direct Justice League, and he was around for the entirety of principal photography. However, after the tragic passing of his daughter, it was announced in May 2017 that Snyder had stepped away from the movie, and Joss Whedon, who had already been brought aboard to rewrite portions of the script, was tasked with overseeing Justice League during reshoots. In recent months, Snyder has been sharing behind-the-scenes photos of his time on Justice League, but Snyder's spokeswoman told WSJ that the director has never watched the Justice League theatrical cut. For those who've been following Snyder on his Vero account, this doesn't come entirely as a shock, as he previously mentioned that he had no knowledge of the Russian family in Justice League, indicating that they were added after his departure.

So there we have it. Barring any surprise announcements in the future, it looks like we can shut the book on Justice League for good. While the DCEU is pressing onwards with movies like Aquaman, Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984, it remains to be seen if Justice League 2 will move forward, but for right now, there are no plans for Zack Snyder to direct another DC movie.
