Shazam! Producer Promises DC Movies Can Still Be Dark

The DC live-action universe has had a rocky life in theaters, full of very high highs and disastrous lows. Luckily for Warner Bros., things seem to be on the upswing after the poor critical and box office performance of Justice League. DC is still surfing on the high of Aquaman's success, and anticipation is at a fever pitch for David F. Sandberg's upcoming blockbuster Shazam!

Shazam! will hit theaters in a matter of days, bringing the dual-personal title character into live-action for the first time. The movie's tone is in stark juxtaposition to Zack Snyder's bleak dramas that started the universe. But according to Shazam! producer Peter Safran, that doesn't mean that the DCEU won't have dark and gritty installments. As he tells it:

I think that DC has the same idea we do now, which is every movie that they make should have the right tone for that particular character. Shazam is such a fun character. He is all about wish fulfillment. He is fun and funny, and that is the tone that you should have for the film. Aquaman has got a tone, fantastical element. Shazam! is fun and funny. Wonder Womans got her thing. I think they realize each tone has to be specific for each movie.

Rather than trying to make one uniform movie, it looks like the DC universe will continue giving more power to the directors. As such, a dark movie will happen as soon as the story and characters call for it.

Peter Safran's comments IGN are sure to be a relief to DC fans who enjoy all the darkness its stories have to offer. While Shazam! is light hearted, there's been tragic stories for many of the characters on the page. Especially Batman, whose origin in based in trauma and childhood loss. The Dark Knight and others simply need to be dark, and have a ton unlike the two most recent releases.

In the same interview from Shazam!'s red carpet, Peter Safrin directly addressed Batman and Todd Phillips' Joker, which is expected to be a dark drama focused on a mentally ill villain. Safrin expanded his thoughts, saying:

Listen, there are certain characters like Batman, like the Joker, that dark tone is perfect for them. Its what you really want to see.

So while Billy Batson and Freddy may have their childhood games in Shazam!, we shouldn't expect the entire DC Universe to go family friendly. There are projects coming down the pipeline which should have their share of dark material, so the studio is going to have to flip between vastly different projects. In addition to Joker and The Batman, Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn) should utilize a mixture of drama and comedy. There's also Wonder Woman 1984 to look forward to, although that Patty Jenkins has up her sleeve for the sequel is anyone's guess.

Shazam! will bring something unique to not only the DC universe, but the superhero genre as a whole. Still functioning as an origin story, the blockbuster will follow 14 year-old Billy Batson as he's given amazing powers from a magical wizard. By saying the word "Shazam", Billy transforms into an adult sized superhero, capable of flight, super strength, and electricity manipulation. But since Billy doesn't know much about superheroes, his foster brother Freddy will step in to guide him toward his destiny.

This marks the first time that a modern superhero focus on the perspective of kids. In cinematic universes, there are tons of us regular folks who are living in a superheroic world. Children have a specific experience; for instance, Billy's friend Freddy is a superfan. Freddy has been following the events of movies like Batman v Superman and Justice League, so he'll be able to help Billy become Shazam.

Shazam! look it's going to be a super fun big screen adventure, and it's early reception has been positive. But moviegoers are still going to want dark and gritty installments later in the DC universe. Aquaman might have focused on family drama and a Game of Thrones-esque struggle for underwater power, but James Wan's blockbuster wasn't especially dark.

Darker subject material and tone will no doubt accompany Todd Phillips' Joker, which isn't going to be connected to the rest of the DC universe. Phillips will give the iconic Batman villain an origin story, and explain how a clown became Gotham's biggest threat. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the project is expected to be decidedly darker than the most recent installments in the shared universe.

On the same page, Matt Reeves' The Batman should have some darkness to it. Gotham's Protector is usually surrounded by loss and murder, and the developing blockbuster will reportedly include a few members of Batman's rogue gallery. The project will follow a younger version of Bruce Wayne, and focus on Batman's top notch detective skills. This is a new approach to the character onscreen, so let's also hope there's the proper amount of darkness in the movie.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) should be an interesting movie, as it'll walk the line between serious mob drama and quirky action romp. Cathy Yan's upcoming blockbuster will once again focus on the denizens of Gotham City, including the villainous Black Mask and Bat-family member Huntress. The movie is also a spinoff for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, who debuted in Suicide Squad. Harley's inclusion obviously means there will be plenty of comedic beats in Birds of Prey, but the characters that make up the ensemble have tragic and violent pasts. Plus, Black Mask is known as a ruthless mob boss in Gotham.

There will be plenty of room for darkness in the future of the DC live-action universe in the future. For now, fans can celebrate that the studio seems to have finally found its footing, and is producing a variety of exciting projects. And with Shazam! flying into theaters in just days, we may have another DC success story on our hands. And that's in no small part due to its unique tone.

What Megan Fox Has Been Doing Since The Transformers Movies

After appearing in projects like Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, Two and a Half Men and Hope & Faith, Megan Fox was propelled to worldwide stardom when she was cast in 2007s Transformers, the first live action adaptation featuring the robots in disguise. Fox gained a lot of attention and media exposure for her portrayal of Mikaela Banes, but while were still getting Transformers movies (the Bumblebee spinoff rolled into theaters last December), Foxs time in the film series would be short, as she departed after the second movie.

However, dont think that Megan Foxs career has slowed down since then. While shell arguably always be best known for her time in the Transformers universe, shes starred in various other movies and television shows that have allowed her to stretch other acting muscles, with the occasional foray back into blockbuster territory.

So if youre interested in learning what shes been up to in the decade since her last Transformers appearance, read ahead to learn about the most notable Megan Fox movies and TV shows that have come out since then.

Transformers MoviesActually, lets first quickly recap Megan Foxs time on the first two Transformers movies. Her character, Mikaela Banes, served as the love interest of Shia LaBeoufs character, Sam Witwicky, and she was also quite skilled at fixing and stealing cars thanks to lessons from her incarcerated father. Transformers is what put Fox on the map for a lot of people, and she was nominated for three Teen Choice Awards and an MTV Movie & TV Award for her participation in that movie.

Megan Fox returned for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and the plan was for her to be back for the third installment, Dark of the Moon, too. However, plans changed after Fox compared working with director Michael Bay to working for Hitler. After initially refusing to apologize, Fox later retracted this statement and said she was very fortunate to be part of the Transformers franchise, but the damage was already done. She was eventually fired and replaced in Dark of the Moon by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, who played Carly Spencer, Sam Witwickys new girlfriend.

Jennifers BodyAlthough Megan Fox had already completed work on Jennifers Body before her ungraceful departure from the Transformers franchise, its nonetheless notable for being her first movie after the debacle, coming out just three months after Revenge of the Fallen. Jennifers Body sees Foxs titular character becoming demonically possessed and killing her male classmates in order to survive, and her best friend Needy, played by Amanda Seyfried, tries desperately to stop her.

Upon its initial release, Jennifers Body was met with mixed-to-negative reviews, and it didnt make much of a splash at the box office either. However, in the wake of the #MeToo movement, the movie has received more attention for its depiction of sexual harassment and how Jennifer later uses her body to exact revenge on those who wronged her. Now Jennifers Body is considered more of a cult classic, but whether or not viewing it through this news lens makes it better is up to the respective viewer.

Jonah HexA year after Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Jennifers Body, Megan Fox returned for Jonah Hex, which brought the same-named DC Comics character to live action for the first time. In the movie, Fox played Lilah, a gun-toting prostitute who is dragged into the chaos that Josh Brolins scarred bounty hunter in caught up in. Its revealed later that Lilahs real name is Tallulah Black, who is a character from the Jonah Hex comics, although Foxs version didnt have the scarred physical appearance of her comic book counterpart.

Alas, like a lot of pre-DCEU DC Comics movies not centered on Batman or Superman, Jonah Hex was met with negative reviews, and it was also a huge box office bomb, making a little under $10 million despite costing $47 million to make. Fortunately for Fox, this wouldnt be the last time shed get to leave her mark on a property that began as a comic book, but well get to that later.

Friends With KidsThus far weve looked at Megan Foxs experience in genre work, but she also has experience in the comedy realm. Case in point, 2011s Friends with Kids, where Fox was part of an ensemble that included Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, Chris ODowd and Edward Burns. Fox played Mary Jane, an actress who becomes romantically involved with Scotts Jason. No spoilers here on what happens with their relationship.

Friends with Kids might not go down in film history as one of the more beloved romantic comedies, but when it came out it did fairly well for itself critically, if not commercially. At the very least, this was an opportunity for people only familiar with Megan Fox through her more visually-stimulating work to see that she could lend her talents to a smaller-scale movie.

The DictatorTo American audiences, Sacha Baron Cohen is arguably best known for starring in the wacky mockumentaries Borat and Bruno, but in 2012, he returned to the big screen in The Dictator, where he played Admiral General Aladeen of the fictional Republic of Wadiya in a purely fictional narrative. Fox plays a fictional version of herself who sleeps with Aladeen and other world leaders in exchange for handsome payment. But she doesnt do cuddling!

Megan Foxs appearance in The Dictator is nothing more than a cameo, but at the very least, it showed that she can poke fun at herself. If/when Sacha Baron Cohen leads another movie as one of his ridiculous characters, maybe she can cameo in that as well or obtain a bigger role.

This Is 40In 2007, Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl starred in Knocked Up, which Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd also appeared in, with the former playing Debbie, the sister of Heigls Allison, and the latter playing Pete, Debbies husband. Five years later, Rudd and Manns characters returned for the semi-sequel/spinoff This is 40, and Megan Fox played Desi, who works for Debbie at her boutique and makes a side living as an escort.

While Knocked Up was met with a lot of positive reviews (though it wasnt without controversy), This is 40 earned more mixed reception. There was talk of making a sequel, which possibly could have resulted in Megan Fox reprising her character. That sequel never moved forward, but This is 40 still remains an noteworthy example of Foxs comedy work.

Teenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesMegan Fox and Michael Bays time on the Transformers movie might not have ended well, but the two of them would reunite for the 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, which Bay produced. Fox played April ONeil, the intrepid reporter who accidentally learns about the Turtles during her investigation into the Foot Clan and soon becomes their closest ally on the surface. As alluded to earlier, the Teenage Mutant Turtles first appeared as comic book characters in the mid-1980s, so this movie marked Foxs second time working on a comic book property.

Megan Fox reprised April ONeil two years later in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, which saw April meeting Casey Jones, the sports equipment-packing vigilante played by Arrows Stephen Amell. While there were plans to make a third Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie set in this continuity, a threequel was scrapped due to Out of the Shadows mediocre box office return, but at least Fox had two movies where she got to star alongside anthropomorphic giant reptiles. Few others have done that.

New GirlUp to this point weve only covered the movies Megan Fox appeared in post-Transformers franchise, but she also collected some TV work as well. In New Girl Season 5, star Zooey Deschanel had to leave for maternity leave, so her character Jess was written as being called in for a long amount of jury duty. Megan Fox filled in for her during that period as Reagan, a pharmaceutical sales representative who rented out Jess room and shook things up among the main characters.

Megan Fox continued recurring as Reagan in New Girl Season 6, but she did not return in the final season. While the New Girl creative team was undoubtedly glad to have Fox fill in while Zooey Deschanel was away, Reagan wasnt particularly well-received among fans, and her presence served as a reminder that theres no substitute for the lead character who hooked people in from the start.

Legends Of The Lost With Megan FoxIn addition to acting, Megan Fox has also made a name for herself in the realm of documentary programming. Last December, the first four episodes of her series Legends Of The Lost With Megan Fox, where saw the actress traveling across the globe and learning about ancient history, cultures and myths.

This show received some criticism for how it blended actual history with pseudo-archaeology, and overall its earned a mixed reception. Its unclear if Travel Channel will bring Legends Of The Lost With Megan Fox back for Season 2; if it does return, Fox will have more opportunities to go visit other countries and learn about their history when shes not acting.

So these are all the major projects that Megan Fox has appeared in since she exited the Transformers franchise, but dont think shes slowing down now. Shell appear later this year in Zeroville and Above The Shadows, and shes also signed on for Big Gold Brick, which doesnt have an assigned release date yet, but began production earlier this month.

Mortal Engines Reviews Are In, Here's What The Critics Think

Blockbuster films based on dystopian young adult novels have enjoyed varying degrees of success over the years and they arrive with such regularity that it takes a lot to stand out. This past weekend, Mortal Engines, based on the novel by Philip Reeve, arrived in theaters, and on the surface it distinguished itself by having The Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson on board as producer and co-screenwriter. So did that pedigree translate to success on the screen?

Reviews for Mortal Engines are in, giving audiences an idea of whether or not they should hop on for a ride aboard the film's mobile cities. CinemaBlend's Mike Reyes gave Mortal Engines 3.5 stars, praising the film's world building. Mike said:

Above all else, Mortal Engines does what any good opener to a potential franchise should do: it baits the hook for the continuing adventures just right, and gives you enough information about its world to want to see more. Here's hoping we do get to hear the rest of the story, as this engine has built up an impressive head of steam.

The world building seems to be a common thread in many of the reviews for Mortal Engines, and it seems that director Christian Rivers as well as Peter Jackson and Co. have created a fascinating and unique world. For IGN's Rafael Motamayor, that was enough to power this film to a positive review, despite the film's narrative weakness. As he explained:

This steampunk epic, which often feels like an over-sized Fury Road on steroids, has great world-building but an underwhelming story.

Indeed, despite all of the visual splendor that was no doubt painstakingly created onscreen, for many reviewers, that was just a beautiful exterior to what was ultimately a hollow film. Mortal Engines doesn't fire on all the cylinders it should have, as the Chicago Tribune's Katie Walsh lamented:

One just wishes the same level craft went into the characters and script. There's not a lot of stake in the outcomes of any of the characters, and the script is laden with clichd old chestnuts that start to get as rusty as the crunchy engines.

While many found that the film was just your standard clichd YA film in fancy new packaging, others found that its derivative nature did not diminish the sheer beauty, inventiveness and the flat out bonkers fun of Mortal Engines. The Wrap's William Bibbiani gushed about the film, comparing it to others that were not appreciated in their time:

It took time for Starship Troopers, Dark City and Speed Racer to earn credit for doing exactly what Mortal Engines is doing right now. It's an overpowering world of steampunk delights, almost Miyazakian in its presentation. It's hard to complain about a path being well-worn when all the sights will make your eyes pop.

One of the main critiques of Mortal Engines seems to be that in a fascinating world, the characters are dull, with little development and reason to invest in them. IndieWire's David Ehrlich laid out this problem in his review:

If not for the wooden dialogue --- and a cast of characters so forgettable that the actors should have been forced to wear name tags --- the hodgepodge storytelling might even seem intentional.

So it seems that there is a lot to like and a lot to dislike about Mortal Engines, but it is clearly bursting at the seams with ideas and story to tell, as Vox's Alissa Wilkinson made plain:

Mortal Engines is not just a movie; it is a lot of movie. It's filled to the point of overflowing with stories, challenges, mysteries, and spectacle --- some of which make for a more compelling film than others.

Ultimately, your opinion on Mortal Engines seems to hinge on whether or not you think its strengths overcome its weaknesses. With a 28% score on Rotten Tomatoes, most critics seem to believe that they do not. But with visual spectacle befitting a big screen presentation, those interested may find something to like in this movie.
