Why Dolph Lundgren Almost Didnt Return For Creed 2

Although the main Rocky film series wrapped up in 2006 with Rocky Balboa (thankfully sparing us from more years of looking at Rocky V as the final chapter), the mythology is still expanding with the Creed movies. This fall, Creed 2 will establish even closer ties with the Rocky saga when Michael B. Jordan's Adonis Creed crosses paths with Ivan Drago, the man who killed his father in Rocky IV, and his son, Viktor. Lundgren is returning to step in Ivan Drago's shoes again for Creed 2, but the actor admitted that initially he didn't want to appear in the sequel because he was worried it might hurt how people perceive the character. As Lundgren answered when asked about how it felt to reprise Drago:

It was a bit strange. It's a bit weird. Because at first I didn't want to do it because I thought it would kind of sad. I didn't want to hurt that image because it's like an iconic character that people, especially people who work out, really look up to this guy.

It's been more than 30 years since we watched Ivan Drago kill Apollo Creed in the ring and later duke it out with Rocky Balboa, and considering that Drago is arguably the Rocky film series' most popular antagonist, I can't blame Dolph Lundgren for worrying that playing the character after all this time could affect how fans perceive him. Granted, Lundgren still looks fit, but the decades passing mean Drago's obviously not going to be in the same condition, similar to how Rocky had seen better days in Creed. In the end, though, as Lundgren noted during a Q&A at Comic-Con Portugal (via Look Mag), it was the Creed 2 script, penned by Sylvester Stallone and Cheo Hodari Coker, that convinced him to join the sequel. Lundgren added:

But the script was really good and I get a chance to show another side of the same man 35 years later, and more of a damaged, struggling side. I used some of my own life that I've been through the last 35 years in this character, so it's kind of full circle. So it turned out to be a really great experience for me. A real dramatic challenge, but also a great experience to look back at my own career the way he looks back at his career as a fighter. There're some parallels that I think are kind of unique. Because usually you don't revisit the character 35 years later. Somebody else will play it. You get a new James Bond. Except, of course, Stallone has done it, so I guess I'm in good company there.

Just like how Rocky didn't resume his fighting career during Creed, Ivan Drago probably won't put his boxing gloves back on during Creed 2, though that doesn't exclude the possibility that someone will throw a punch at him or vice versa. Instead, the sequel will see Adonis throwing down in fisticuffs with Viktor Drago, but judging by Dolph Lundgren's comments, it sounds like the movie will explore challenges that Lundgren has to deal with in his older years. Perhaps all those years of juicing up took a toll on his body, or maybe him losing to Rocky led to him being ostracized in Russia.

First Godzilla: King Of The Monsters Image Shows The Creature Using His Atomic Breath

2014's Godzilla didn't give us as much of the famous monster as many would have liked, but the first picture of the upcoming sequel is hopefully evidence we've got some pretty solid monster action on the way. The first official image of Godzilla: King of the Monsters has been revealed and it's exactly the sort of thing monster movie fans will want to see, Godzilla showing off his power with a massive blast of his atomic breath. Check it out.

The image shows Godzilla firing his atomic breath up into the sky. It's a great way to start talking about the new film, as the use of Godzilla's atomic breath, right down the throat of another monster, was far and away the best part of the last movie. It appears to be indiscriminate, we don't see what he' shooting at, but he's almost certainly shooting at something. We know that both Mothra and Rodan, other monsters capable of flight, will be in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, so it's possible that he is fighting one of them off in this shot.

Alternatively, he could also be attacking people, like a plane flying overhead. Entertainment Weekly reveals that a large part of Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be focused on how humanity is reacting to the discovery that Godzilla exists. While the film is set five years after 2014's Godzilla, and the monster hasn't been seen since then, people are still in a complete panic over Godzilla. According to director Michael Dougherty...

The world is reacting to Godzilla in the same way we would react to any other terrifying incident, in that we are overreacting, but there's paranoia and endless speculation about whether he is the only one out there or whether we're threatened by others like his kind.

If humanity is overreacting to the existence of Godzilla, then you can be sure when the creature does rear its head once more, people are going to respond. Has civilization spent the last five years building weapons that will hopefully be able to take the monster down? Perhaps that is what Godzilla is fighting against here.

Godzilla__: King of the Monsters is the third film in the "Monsterverse" which, in addition to the previous Godzilla, includes Kong: Skull Island. That film gave us a post-credits sequence that confirmed the existence of other monsters, many of which we will apparently see in King of the Monsters. We also know that eventually, all of this will lead to a showdown between the two most famous giant monsters in movie history.

While this single image isn't much, it's likely to get Godzilla fans excited for what is to come. Godzilla: King of the Monsters will arrive in theaters May 31, 2019.

The end of a cinematic era is almost upon us. This December will bring forth Star Wars: Episode IX, which is not only the final chapter of the current Star Wars sequel trilogy, but also concluding the Skywalker Saga. Episode IX kicked off principal photography back in August, and today production has officially wrapped. To celebrate the occasion, director and co-writer J.J. Abrams dropped this photo of three of the main Episode IX actors together in warm embrace.

Emulating the original trio of Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa and Han Solo in the original Star Wars trilogy, weve watched Daisey Ridleys Rey, John Boyegas Finn and Oscar Isaacs Poe Dameron fight the forces of evil in the current Star Wars trilogy. So its rather touching and appropriate that J.J. Abrams chose to commemorate Star Wars: Episode IX finishing its shoot by showing the actors together on set, with the crew in the background. This is actually only Abrams second Episode IX-related tweet, as his very first tweet kicked off the start of principal photography on August 1, 2018. This is in sharp contrast to how Solo: A Star Wars Story director Ron Howard used social media to keep people apprised of how that standalone movie was coming along.

Of course, it should be noted that while numerous behind-the-scenes Star Wars: Episode IX have leaked online, this is our first official look at the next Star Wars movie actually showing the actors. Finns hair is longer than it was in his previous appearances (maybe Poes is too though its hard to tell), and Reys hair is done up similarly to how shes typically worn it while on Jakku in The Force Awakens. Then theres the fact that theyre in a desert, an environment frequently shown in the Star Wars franchise. Theres no word yet on whether this means were returning to Tatooine or Jakku in Episode IX, or if the characters will be on a brand new desert planet, but lets hope theyve properly hydrated.

With 10 months to go until Star Wars: Episode IXs release, Disney and Lucasfilm havent released any official plot details yet. All thats been confirmed is that Episode IX will pick up one year after The Last Jedi, which saw The Resistance being nearly wiped out by The First Order. Still, with the next Star Wars Celebration occurring in April, ideally some concrete details (including the title) and some footage will arrive in the near future.

Star Wars: Episode IX will also see Adam Driver, Lupita Nyongo, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Mark Hamill, Joonas Suotamo, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams returning to reprising their respective roles, while unused footage of Carrie Fisher from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi will allow Leia to appear as well. As for Episode IXs new faces, they include Naomie Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Dominic Monaghan and Matt Smith.
